I just heard on the news that there are trees and powerlines down in Shawnee. They said there were some power outages and a tree blown over into a house here in Gardner. I still have power here but the wind blew hard for a bit here. I thought the little tree in the backyard was going to break off. I have the dog next to me now, he hates thunder. I will be driving around tomorrow and do some investigating around town and if i have time i might have to venture up into Shawnee and see what its like there.

This was taken in Gardner, across town from where i live. There are numerous roofs in that area that have damage along with fences gone. It makes me wonder what happened because if you go northeast into Olathe there is damage and all in to Overland Park.

Good thing you hadn't had a big bowl of beans or the poor guy wouldn't have known where to hide.
But seriously. Do you suspect the damage was from a tornado, straight line winds, or microbursts? I've seen microbursts flatten fields like a steamroller went over them. Ellis and Russell Counties are in a bad place on the outer edges of the radars so that a tornado that only has circulation in the lower levels of the storm may not even show up on radar.

They are saying it was a microburst. It sounds like Shawnee got hit also and it was just in a little area. This area in Gardner affected about a block.

Yeah, small areas with heavy damage tend to be microbursts. It's surprising just what they'll do. Winds have been measured in them over 100 MPH.

FB friend posted pics of her neighborhood in Olathe. Her trampoline ended up embedded in her neighbor's house.

We're in Shawnee, and it was pretty localized damage. A couple of coworkers got hit pretty bad. Part of our area didn't have electricity until noon, but it was a more rural area from what I understand (west of K-7). However, the only thing that took on damage at my house was my Tomato plant. One of them now needs a sump pump, or maybe it will be Hydroplonic now instead- regardless it flooded.
One of the kids at school today said this... "My mom told me there was an upside down tornado" after I questioned him a little more he told me she really said it was a microburst. But I thought it was funny that he thinks a microburst is the same as an upside down tornado.

Wow, that's pretty crazy stuff. I had a friend tell me this morning that there was a family (somewhere) in Oklahoma that had a tornado tear down their house. The son and the dog were in a closet and the only things left standing in the house were the closet and the fireplace mantel. On the mantel, still standing, were two angel figurines.

Just because you are an atheist doesn't mean that God doesn't have His angels watching over you. He loves everybody!

I've come to the conclusion that if you're in a tornado, fire, car accident, etc., that you should be an angel statue or a plastic Jesus since that's what gets saved.
Seems to me that if you were being protected by God, that he/she/it would only destroy the angel statues and protect everything else as a sign of why you should have faith. But of course logic and religion tend to be contradictory.

Don't say that! I'd say it more often if I didn't work with children. I think their parents might frown on the expression! I myself think it is great and use the expression with adults at every opportunity.

Hmmm. Ellis Co. seems to be sitting in the go around spot again. Not near the rain some of our neighbors got. But we have had fair rain and need the sun to get things going so no complaints yet.

Maybe it'd be best if the local spotters and the weather service would just stay home so Japanese tourists get a good look without those stupid and totally useless emergency service spotters and bonafide researchers getting in the road.

Maybe you should ask the local emergency services storm spotters about it. I was on a Trego Co. road once that was a clusterf**k with vehicles stretched for more than half a mile, and the Trego Sheriff was blocked by approx 30 vehicles he couldn't get past in another case. I have nothing against storm watching, but cutting off those who are "sent" to spot and idiots putting themselves in danger by trying to get that shot that will make them rich is getting out of hand.
On the subject of crowded roads during storms, I do agree with Luke on one thing. All the tourists and lame brains putting themselves at risk for thrills and fame are largely there due to the hype put out by the weather service and the professional chasers.
