blizzard warning has nothing to due with the amount of snow is is the wind coming with the snow I wanted to call BS. I thought that you had to have a combination of snow/wind/temp to qualify. But I got this info from NOAA before I made a fool of myself. - Quote :
- A blizzard is the combination of cold temperatures, strong winds, and poor visibility due to blowing snow. Specifically, the Sioux Falls Forecast Office issues a blizzard warning when the following conditions are expected to occur for 3 hours or more:
1. Sustained wind speeds of 35 mph or more, or frequent gusts to 35 mph or greater; 2. Considerable falling and/or blowing snow that reduces visibility frequently to 1/4 mile or less.
There is no set temperature requirement for issuing a blizzard warning but often very cold arctic outbreaks that produce blizzard conditions are accompanied by temperatures in the single digits or sub zero readings. These temperatures combined with the wind produces life threatening wind chills making blizzards one of the most dangerous weather situations to affect the northern plains.
One misconception is that blizzards are often accompanied with heavy snow. A surprising fact is that often very little snow falls with a blizzard because there simply is not a whole lot of available moisture associated with these arctic outbreaks. There are occasional exceptions but for the most part it appears worse because the driving wind whips up existing snow reducing visibilities to less than 1/4 mile. In fact, we can have a blizzard without any falling snow! These are termed ground blizzards and can occur when strong winds cause blowing and drifting of loose, existing snow cover. In these cases, poor horizontal visibility is confined to a few feet above ground and often you may be able to see the sun under cloudless skies directly above. | |

| I knew this would happen! You guys want the snow, get all excited about it, and it comes here instead. It's "snowing" inch wide "flakes" that clink when they hit the ground. The news this morning at 6-ish said there would be no precip. until after 4pm. | |

| GRRRRRRRRRRR lets try this again!
INCLUDING THE CITIES OF...HAYS...ELLIS 1056 AM CDT FRI MAR 27 2009
...WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 7 AM CDT SATURDAY...
A WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 7 AM CDT SATURDAY.
SNOWFALL TOTALS BETWEEN 6 TO 8 INCHES ARE EXPECTED BY FRIDAY NIGHT. IN ADDITION STRONG WINDS OF 25 TO 40 MPH CAN BE EXPECTED WHICH WILL REDUCE VISIBILITIES TO LESS THAN ONE HALF MILE AT TIMES DUE TO BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW. THIS SNOW IS EXPECTED TO TAPER OFF EARLY SATURDAY MORNING BUT GUSTY WINDS WILL CONTINUE TO BLOW AND DRIFT THE SNOW.
A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR HEAVY SNOW MEANS SEVERE WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED OR OCCURRING. SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS OF SNOW ARE FORECAST THAT WILL MAKE TRAVEL DANGEROUS. ONLY TRAVEL IN AN EMERGENCY. IF YOU MUST TRAVEL...KEEP AN EXTRA FLASHLIGHT... FOOD...AND WATER IN YOUR VEHICLE IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY.[/size]
Ok as I said, I dont know where they are coming up with this. All we are getting is piddly flurries.
