| I have nothing nice to say about the women who continually try to use men for drinks and the snobby waitresses they have @ Gella's.
Oh, by the way just because you had a lady friend on your birthday date doesn't mean you aren't light in the loafers so to speak. Lots of gay men date women, enjoy watchin them dance and then go home and take one up the wazoo like a real man LOL!
I remember the old joke told on the Tonight Show by a very lesbian comedian, "If it weren't for gay men us fat chicks wouldn't have anybody to dance with."

| I notice a common thing in these forums is that somebody will always say someplace to eat sucks. Matter of tastes I suppose. I just gave a Michelob Pale Ale to LukeThr. I like it, he didn't. And he says Gella's brews are too strong for his tastes. Oh well, that's why there's lots of varieties. | |

| I have tried the sampler at Gella's and liked three out of the (I believe) eight samples of beer. The two times I ate there, didn't much care for it. I understand there used to be a good chef there when they started, but didn't eat there in the beginning because it was always too busy. I have never had a steak there, though, that may make a difference too. | |

I don't drink beer anymore, but the last time we ate at Gella's I ordered the most stout beer they had. They were out, so I ordered the second most stout. When I drank beer, I liked to hold it up to the light and block it out completely. Guiness Stout at room temperature was one of my favorites. Having said that, I liked Bud, and Big Mouth Mickey's. Anyone ever had Elephant Malt Liquor? I like fried bologna sandwiches. I thought Gella's fbs was good. I had never had one with coleslaw before. I thought they put too much on. Haven't been there in a year or two, at least.

| Thanks SciFi. I can drink a stout, and don't mind one on a rare occasion, but am more of a lager and ale type. Never had Elephant Malt, but I can say I no doubt drank a few thousand Mickey's in my youth. When Mickey's had the pull off top with that nice big opening I'd put 2 of them on the car seat at lunch time when I worked construction and guzzle them both down at days end. It was often 100 degrees and I drank em warm. As soon as my pump was primed, I'd head downtown for a couple or 5 cold ones before going home to shower, then it was party time. | |

I'm also a fan of St Pauli and Becks. In my youth we drank alot of Moosehead, Fosters, Little Kings, and Mickeys in my group. We did drink Bock beer at times and the occasional dark too. Lately I've been leaning towards Lagers and pale ales with heavy hops. - SciFi wrote:

| Last night I was talking to an old friend I have not seen in a long time- when I relayed to him that I was sitting back, watching the TV, and having a beer. He then asked me, "What kind of beer are you drinking?" I thought to myself, "What a silly question, everybody knows what beer I drink". But then I remembered, that is no longer a true statement, not since "The Beer Dilemna".
I've always been a Bud man. Specifically, I've always been a huge fan of Bud Select ever since its inception. Then something happened some weeks back you may or may not be aware of. Anheuser Busch sold out. THE American beer company, the company that for the last six months has been running numerous commercial spots boasting about their commitment, dedication, and American spirit, these boys sold out. To a Belgian company called InBev. A BELGIAN company.
I for one felt betrayed. We're talking THE American beer company, and now they're majority owned by a BELGIAN company. Well if Anheuser Busch can change their allegiances, so can I. Budweiser and all other Anheuser Busch products are now on my "DO NOT BUY" list.
So what beer am I supposed to drink now? There lay my dilemna. So I began searching for the American beer I could now give my patronage to.
Immediately, if you're thinking American beer, and you ain't thinking Anheuser Busch, the next name that comes to mind is Coors. Well, in case you didn't know, Coors is owned by Molson Brewing, a Canadian company. Not an American beer.
What about Miller, brewed in Milwaukee, gotta be a good choice. Nope, Miller is owned by a South African company. Not an American beer.
Wow, wiping out the big three sure takes a big chunk of the potential beer candidates. Hell, even Pabst gets wiped out in that discussion, as Pabst is nothing but a marketing company, all their beer is actually brewed by the South African company of Miller.
After the big three, the next biggest American brewery is none other than Samuel Adams, one I know most of you are quite fond of. So I checked, and yes, they are entirely American owned. Hot ..., we got us a winner? No, no we don't. Samuel Adams, of course, is based out of the northeast but sell their beer all over the country. But Samuel Adams isn't big enough to own breweries in enough locations nationwide to be able to effectively sell beer all over the country. So to meet the nationwide exposure they contract out their brewing. Think about that the next time you're watching a Samuel Adams commerical talking about how it doesn't leave their brewery unless they're satisfied -- approximately 70% of all Samuel Adams isn't even brewed in their own breweries, it's contracted out. And oh yeah, who do they contract the brewing out to? Miller.
Next up then in terms of biggest American-owned breweries is one I've never heard of, Yeungling. Although the name doesn't sound it, it is an American owned brewery, been in operation almost two hundred years or so. And unlike Samuel Adams, they don't contract out their brewing, it's all done in-house in their breweries in Pennsylvania and Florida. But since it's only brewed on the east coast, it's not marketed nationwide, no way to handle the distributing. So -brother living in New York-, have you tried it?
At this point, we're kind of screwed when it comes to well-known macro-breweries that are American owned. So this brings us in to the microbrews and the local breweries. Yes, those are American owned, and a popular one that makes its way across the country is Sierra Nevada. Ever had that? Yuck! What about local micro-brews, such as Free State out of Lawrence or Boulevard out of KC? Again, ever had either of those? Count me out. I may wanna buy American, but I still desire quality, especially if I'm gonna pay twice as much for it.
Now I'm completely screwed.
Resigned now to the fact that I may not be able to buy American when it comes to my beer, I now faced the decision of what country to support with my beer money.
Give my money to South Africa? NO! Give my money to Canada? HELL NO! Give my money to any EU conglomerate? HELL ... NO!
Who then? What country could I give my money to? The answer came to me finally -- Mexico. Why not Mexico? Find a totally Mexican owned brewery, give them my support, let them continue to employ Mexicans, so I don't have to worry about them crossing my border. HA! Had to throw that little dig in there, dad, don't worry about it.
Thinking about Mexican beer now, well, I've always kind of enjoyed the #1 brand that comes out of Mexico, that being Corona. But here's something for you -- Corona is brewed by a Mexican brewery company that is NOT wholly Mexican owned. In fact, it's only minority owned by Mexicans. The majority ownership? Anheuser Busch. And yes, that majority ownership was part of the transfer of assets to InBev.
Ok, no Corona for me. So I searched, and I searched, and I searched. And I finally found one. I finally found a brewery that is entirely Mexican owned and produces a beer that ends up being distributed in America. And to top it off, I even recognize the names of a few of their beers, names such as Sol, Cerveza, and Dos Equis. So ladies and gentlemen, I now am a Mexican beer drinker.
So there you have it. The beer dilemna has been resolved. For the moment. Until the next acquisition. Let's hope that's a good long ways off.

| I have no problem buying Euro beer. They know their stuff. But then again, I like old Euro style lagers and pale ales. Typical American beers are ok, but they aren't what a man who seeks the perfect brew looks for. I'm trying to find brews called "barleywine" Sierra Nevada makes one called Bigfoot, but I havn't tried it. Barleywine is to beers what Acupulco Gold and Panama Red were once to potheads. Barleywine is the highest alcohol pale ale made with alcohol at 10% or higher and very high IBU's (international bitterness units). I know in America we've been trained to think bitter is bad, but to a true beer lover a bitter beer face is a big smile. It can't just be bitter, it has to be balanced with the right malts etc. Most big American beers have an IBU of around 15 to 20. Michelob Pale Ale has an IBU rating of 37 which in my opinion makes it the best product in the Anheuser Busch lineup. Bigfoot by Sierra Nevada has an IBU of 90 and Sam Adams Imperial Pilsner has an IBU of 110. | |
