Stop the Prairie Poisonings!
Prairie dog poisonings would destroy the largest prairie dog town in Kansas…
…and effectively end black-footed ferret recovery in the Sunflower State.
Urge Kansas Governor Sebelius to stop the poisonings!
Poisoning could begin as early as this Monday, December 15th!
Just last year, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service worked with wildlife-friendly ranchers to reintroduce 24 near-extinct black-footed ferrets on private land in Kansas. The ferrets are the first of their kind in the state in 50 years.
But now, against the wishes of landowners, County Commissioners want to poison the prairie dogs these highly endangered ferrets depend on to survive -- even as federal officials consider protecting the prairie dogs themselves.
We need your help to stop the poisoning of the prairie. Please write Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius and urge her to do what she can to stop these poisonings.
Wildlife-friendly ranchers like Larry and Bette Haverfield have worked hard to preserve the American grasslands that they own and lease. That’s why they volunteered their land for the reintroduction of the once-thought-to-be-extinct black-footed ferret.
But last week, citing a century-old law, commissioners in Logan County put the ranchers on notice: forced prairie dog poisonings could happen as early as this Monday, December 15th -- a move that would destroy the state’s largest prairie dog town and effectively end black-footed ferret recovery in the state.
Write Kansas Governor Sebelius today and urge her to stop the needless poisonings on the prairie.
Prairie dogs play an important role in the health and balance of the American plains. Hawks, burrowing owls, swift fox and other wildlife -- especially the highly endangered black-footed ferret -- depend on prairie dogs for burrows and a food source.
But after decades of poisonings, prairie dog populations -- and the health of the grasslands they support -- have declined. In fact, just days ago, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service announced that they will consider prairie dogs for protections under the Endangered Species Act.
We can’t let county commissioners poison the Kansas prairie -- and end recovery of one of North America’s most endangered animals.
Take Action Now! Urge Governor Sebelius to do what she can to help these wildlife-friendly ranchers and save the prairie dogs and black-footed ferrets that live on their land -- before the poisoning begins.
For the wild ones,
Jonathan Proctor Great Plains Representative Defenders of Wildlife

We're poisning Prarie Dogs because of what they're damaging? What the HELL? These animals are kind of like us, they have feelings, and they don't want them all stomped on. We shouldn't hurt these poor animals just to save our own asses. If the Govener doesn't see that, then why the hell is she govener to begin with? Doesn't make any sense to me. We shoud all come together as a whole, and change this law, it's 100 hundred years old...isn't it time for change?

nothing should be killed to "save"anything-especially for monetary reasons.leave everything as nature intended and if a cow gets hurt be humane and put in down and eat it.

I know guys who shoot them for sport. I don't see much sport in watching Prairie Dogs explode from hits with a ballistic tipped .223, but I'm not a farmer dealing with them either so my opinions are mixed. I wouldn't want to kill a bobcat because I rarely get to see one, but I'd shoot a coyote because they are plentiful and kill lots of small pets and other farm animals.
If someone killed prairie dogs because they were overpopulated and causing real trouble I could understand that, but I wouldn't suggest killing all of them. They damn near wiped out jackrabbits here a couple different times with mass kills. One question I have is whether heavy populations of ferrets would pose a threat to anything. Too much of anything can mean trouble.

well, it would seem that too much manipulation by humans has totally thrown off the balance of the nature of everything. we need to learn to live in harmony with nature and not destroy everthing that doesn't directly benefit us. Right now coyote numbers are way down due to mange and there are more turkeys and rabbits around than I have seen in ages. nature is out of balance.

Maybe there should be an approach to the overpopulation of deer. What we should do its round up all those prairie dogs, deer, flies, and snakes and send them over to the Middle East and let the towel heads deal with them.

Shooting things to put on the table is fine. I don't hunt for sport because I see no sport in killing animals harmless to me. But if we'd have a season for shooting gangbangers I'd be there with heavy firepower. Now that would be sport.

Don't know how it works in Kansas, but if'n you hit a deer in Tennessee- you call up the game warden... he shows up and has you sign a paper... and you got you some free roadkill. I know 'cause I done it.
About the OP... I've shot and poisoned plenty of prairie dogs, and personally don't care whether or not other folks want to do that. In my case, this was in a pasture where the people wanted them eradicated for two reasons: first, to protect livestock. Second, there has been pending action by the EPA regarding prairie dogs in some areas for some time... and if the critters ain't there, then the beaurocrats can't protect them.
What pisses me off about this situation is that the county wants to poison those prairie dogs AGAINST THE WISHEs OF THE LANDOWNERS. It's THEIR land... it should THEIR business whether or not they keep the critters around. If they want to wipe them out to protect their livestock and keep the rattlesnake population down, them I'm all for it. If they want to keep them around and help out the ferrets and the snakes... then I'm all for it. But it shouldn't be any of the county's business.

ROADKILL serious business in Kansas! No FOOLIN! CALL KFGC !!!!!!!1
We had a huge Dawg problem on one of our farms. Eventually had to gas them. No before I and friends put some 6mm rounds into some of them.....I need to find that photo of piled up prarie dogs.
I remember seeing a business in Arizona that used a vacuum truck to suck prairie dogs out the holes. Then they hauled them to some prairie dog refuse. We are still listed on the fish and games hunt list. Every year i get about 3 or 4 calls.
Anyone hear any NEW cougar stories? I have and just wondered if they had heard any. Apparently put in Kansas to take care of turkey population. I know bob cats love turkey.

So instead of an extended turkey season they opt to re-introduce a cat known for killing both livestock and men? I know they've been seen on the rivers around here in past years but I'd rather not get em living here too thick.
