Advice needed...sump pumps

You may remember a few months ago, we discovered a floor drain we didn't know about, in our basement, due to rainfall that the drain system couldn't keep up with (we're assuming this was the cause of the flooding). We now have a bit of time set aside to install a sump pump. We bought the pump. On the box it says it can be used in a basin as small as 10 inches in diameter. For us, the smaller the hole in the floor, the better, as this is in the main living area down there. If we decide to keep the basin smaller in diameter, is it likely that the pump will burn out?

I'm so not looking forward to the work we need to do, but I'm sick of having to "slurp out" the drain with the shop vac, so this will be good... if it works.
