I need gardening advice please

I have grown maters in pots and broccoli.Now I have a humongus yard which has nothing but dirt,no weeds or grass and I want a garden.What should I be doing right now??And yes I just got a rototiller.I figured I'd ask you guys since you probably know what works here in Hays AND do raspberries grow here if I order plants?I know the zone thing but my b/f says sometimes it don't pan out.

Get a load of the free compost from the city and work it in the soil. That would be a good start for a garden.

Last year I went and got some for my tomatoes and it was so gross with flies

I guess I better do it this weekend,I saw 3 baby flies on my porch yesterday:( thanks!!

rasberries do just fine. plant them where they won't bear brunt of harsh north wind in winter and they'll be okay.

I am taking notes on all this,I have read tons on web but it gets confusing-I just want a good-sized garden for my first time that's somewhat easy to get goin

It'll take a few years before you get more than a few berries on each plant. Bunnies and birds love them, so that's something else you'll have to deal with if you want a decent crop.

I hear wheat and pot do well here....

where do you live??? actually the pot won't be ready for harvest yet, have to wait a few months.

If it grows in a ditch around here it'll never be ready. Unless you're throwing your own seeds there. There ain't a buzz in a bale of Kansas ditch weed.

And arrested for smoking garbage if caught. It's good for birdseed and cows and that's about it.

Tell us what else you'd like to grow wilky, and we can give more specific advice. Over the years either I, or my parents grew damn near everything.
