Mattel was one of the major suppliers to the Pentagon in the Viet Nam era.

They claimed that Mattel made handgrips for the M-16, but there's no account of them actually doing so. Troops in the field called the M-16 Mattels because they were cheap crappy and plastic. Mattel was making a toy that really looked like one, but apparently never made the real ones.

I did have a mattel lever action cap gun when I was about 5. Still got it too. Seems alot smaller now than it did then.
