| Hey everyone... Something is nibbling on my plants. I have holes in my Coleus plants in the front yard. Even the biggest, strongest one- which we thought might escape the attack. And a couple of my tomato leaves, and one tomato are showing signs of damage as well. What do I do to save my lovely plants? What product do I buy, or is there some home remedy that I don't know about??? Would pictures help??? | |

| I've seen a ton of Grasshoppers lately. Just little buggers- no big ones like the ones I remember as a kid. Lots of ants around too... At least they're outside and not inside. The sevin stuff won't kill my plants or grass will it? | |

| Sevin is one of the safest pesticides. Won't hurt your plants or you if used right. Be very careful about using it on flowering plants though because it's a serious bee killer. Spray liquid Sevin after blooms close in the evening and not on the actual flowers themselves if possible. Scatter Sevin dust on the plants leaves but not on blooms that attract bees.
Sevin will stop or slow down most above ground bugs, but its not effective on underground bugs like grubs though. The dust is longer lasting unless it rains but will turn everything white, so on ornamentals you might want the spray.
Honey bees and bumble bees like big bright flowers, as do butterflies. Smaller bees like small blooms and so do some butterflies. Keep in mind that not all ants are destrutive to plants and may actually be helping your garden pollinate too. I see lots of small black ants on melon blooms of different types.
I've had some heat damage, even to heat loving cantaloupe, tomato, and watermelon vines during the two hottest days this week in the form of new foliage wilting or dying. Can't say 105 degrees with 113 heat index makes me feel great either. | |

| Thanks Ratz , and Justoo I picked up some Sevin Spray today. I just have the tomatoes and the coleus plants so I don't have any thing "flowering" at the moment. Next year I will though. If these Tomatoes turn out as well as I hope they do I might actually try a garden bed next year. | |

| Don't think you'll risk killing beneficial insects on those plants. Follow directions for tomatoes as far as the time between spraying and harvest and you'll be ok. | |
