| Get a jar, put rubbing alcohol (or some other nasty liquid...justoo...what else works) in it, put the jar under the leaf the worm is on, shake the leaf until the worm falls into the jar (you might need to nudge it with your fingernail). I don't do worms, either! Ick. | |

| This common garden pest is called a green hornworm. Hornworms are actually caterpillars that chew large holes in the leaves of ornamentals (roses), tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, and potatoes. Their young larvae are white but they eventually mature into a deep green that blends in with the foliage making them hard to detect. You can control them by hand-picking them or using an organic control called BT (bacillus thuringiensis) commonly sold under the product name Dipel or MVP. BT is non-toxic to humans, pets, and the environment, and can be applied right up to the time you harvest. You can purchase these products at a local garden center or through an on-line catalog such as Gardens Alive at: [url=http://www.gardensalive.com. [/url] Tomato Hornworm (Monduca quinquemaculata): The adult sphinx moth is gray or brown with white and dark mottling, has five yellow spots on each side of the abdomen, two narrow stripes extending diagonally across each wing, and a wing spread of 4 or 5 inches. Caterpillars are green with eight diagonal white stripes which join to form a series of V's, have a green horn with black sides projecting at the rear, and are 3 to 4 inches long. DID YOU KNOW: Sphinx moths are also known as hawk moths? They are often mistaken for hummingbirds because of their rapid wing movement and habit of hovering in front of flowers while feeding. EATING HABITS: Like all butterflies and moths, the sphinx moth is a caterpillar before it becomes an adult moth. As a caterpillar, it feasts on plants, especially Virginia creeper and grape leaves. As an adult, it hovers in front of flowers and uses its long tongue, or proboscis, to sip the nectar. The sphinx moth proboscis, which is like a hollow tube, rolls up when it is not in use. | |

And the Green Hornworm tastes great with just about any summer vegetable. Fried Green Tomato Hornworms Yield: 4 servings 3 tablespoons olive oil 16 tomato hornworms 4 medium green tomatoes, sliced into 1/4-inch rounds Salt and pepper to taste White cornmeal In a large skillet or wok, heat the oil. Then lightly fry the hornworms, about 4 minutes, taking care not to rupture the cuticles of each insect under high heat. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside. Season tomato rounds with salt and pepper, then coat with cornmeal on both sides. In a large skillet, fry tomatoes until lightly browned on both sides Top each round with 2 fried tomato hornworms. Garnish the paired hornworms with a single basil leaf. | |
