| Couldn't forget that one. Got alot of others to list yet. But since you bring it up. Dr. Birney's Catarrhal Powder....Was a preparation used for nasal congestion, colds, etc. It came in a small glass bottle with a glass tube in it used for snuffing the product. It was so popular in Chicago that factory women were spending their entire weeks pay on it. And apparently a dental assistant in Ellis was fond of it too since 96 bottles were found in his outhouse. A variety of other plain unmarked vials were found there too. Did I mention Dr. Birney's active ingredient was cocaine? | |

Common ones from 100 years ago you should know.
Fletcher's Castoria. Pitcher's Castoria. Chesebrough Vaseline Mentholatum..... Early Jars were embossed Wichita Kansas. Used for alot more than you think. Sloan's Liniment Listerine
This next bunch are not so familiar now, but some were very common here in the late 1800's
Electric Bitters.... There were lots of Bitters brands. Lash's Bitters The Best Cathartic And Blood Purifier..... Get drunk and take a dump. Dr. Miles Nervine.... A tonic. Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery..... Consumption (tuberculosis) cure. Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription.....It claimed to cure nervousness, dizziness and melancholy, promote the appetite, and give the body robust health without opium, cocaine or any narcotic. Lab analysis showed among other things agaric, derived from poison mushrooms, digitalis, a powerful heart stimulant, opium, and alcohol. Liquizone.... Claimed to be liquid ozone and cure all diseases. It was watered down highly corrosive acids. Pierce's Extract of Smart Weed....Cured anything from Typhoid to Cholera. With opium of course. Boschee's German Syrup.... Cough medicine. Opium. Dr. Jaynes Expectorant.....To relive chest congestion. Contained opium. Mexican Mustang Linament...... Opium. One Day Cough cure....Morphine and Cannabis Indica. Green's Ague Conqueror....Malaria cure. Swift's Syphilitic Specific.... Syphilis cure. Newbros Herpicide For The Scalp....Dandruff cure Burnette's Cocaine..... Dandruff cure. Dr. Drake's German Croup Remedy.... Opium Chamberlain's Colic Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy.....Opium of course. Shiloh's Cure.....Contained the new miracle drug heroin. | |
