| I saw this on TV. First they ban Playboy from camp stores now this. If they keep going the only kind of recruits they'll be able to get will be laughed at by the French. This is just like I said about fire departments banning smoking. If they can't take cigarette smoke they got no business being on a fire department. And regardless of FD or military, by the time it starts affecting their health they are too old to be fighting anyways. | |

| Hell, if I ran an operation that relied on indentured servitude- I'd want to protect my investment too. You give up all rights when you sign up for the military, so I don't know why this should surprise anybody.
I find it a little disturbing that so many people are willing to sell their freedom for a paycheck... but I guess I might do the same if I had no other prospects.

Recruiters are currently meeting their quotas with no problems, thanks to the recession. Reenlistment bonuses have been cut back a lot because they're no longer necessary. A smoking ban would certainly hurt recruiting and retention, at least in the short term. Looks like they have a window of opportunity. - Bighead wrote:

You sell your freedom for a paycheck. You have no other prospects. Very few people do. Sellout. |

It would sound stupid if John Wayne said "Pop a mint if you got em".

True enough, but it's a matter of degree. I won't be prosecuted if I walk away from my current employment, nor will I be required- also under threat of prosecution- to go do nasty things in some hell-hole halfway 'round the world. I may be a slave to my bills and my belly, but I'm not under a term of indenture.

Ever since the Cold War began it's been us verses them, but communism never was the real reason for the Cold War. The only reason communists were the enemy is because they were taking what America wanted. One reason (I believe) that we never went into North Korea or North Vietnam and took them over besides not wanting the communists to escalate the war was because our leaders didn't want to destroy the real prizes in the game. And those prizes weren't the Southern nations, but rather they had hoped the North Koreans and North Vietnamese would see the great emancipator USA and convert. The US didn't destroy them because our leaders wanted to assimilate them and it failed miserably.
