| I wonder how much alunimum came in contact with the food. Alunimum also causes alzheimers. |

| Aluminum has been suspected to have been a cause of Alzheimers but never proven | |

| Aluminum reacts negatively with numerous chemicals. It's one of the most reactive things there is. Could be many by-products when acidic substances contact it. | |

| China, India, Southern Asia and the Pacific seem to be where alzheimers is growing fastest, and Africa has lower rates. Is Africa lower because of malnutrition, or just because half of them die before they get it? | |

| AIDS and starvation being part of the possible reasons for a lower incidence of Alzheimers in Africa were my point mike. Not to mention crocodiles, cobras, tropical diseases, civil wars, etc.
I wonder how they explain alzheimers in old farts here that followed fairly good diet practices and never had KFC and McDonalds? I tend to think it's more about genetics and chemical exposures myself. | |

| The reason: Genes don't always stay where scientists put them. Two years ago, a genetically modified corn called StarLink was found in supermarket taco shells that Kraft Foods (nyse: KFT - news - people ) had emblazoned with the Taco Bell name. The StarLink gene had been approved for use only in animal feed, because regulators feared that food containing it would cause allergic reactions in some people. Hundreds of product recalls followed as it became clear that many brands of corn chips and taco shells contained traces of the StarLink gene. The StarLink fiasco was an embarrassing event for Aventis CropScience, the division of French drug giant Aventis (nyse: AVE - news - people ) that developed StarLink and was supposed to ensure that it didn't get into human food. (CropScience has since been sold to Bayer.) But it may have been impossible for Aventis to keep the gene separate. Flour containing the biotech corn could easily have mixed with flour meant for human consumption. It is also possible for pollen containing a modified gene to make its way from one cornfield to another. Two years later, it is still not entirely clear how the errant gene got into supermarket food. In any event, the amount of DNA containing the StarLink gene that was found in most of the recalled foods was minimal. Aventis CropScience even argued that the recall should be stopped, because much of the food did not contain enough of the StarLink protein--the insect poison that the plant makes because it contains the modified gene--to cause an allergic reaction in anyone, not even infants. http://www.forbes.com/2002/08/22/0822burger.html | |
