| I heard there might be a new bbq style restaraunt coming to town. Any truth to this? Or is it more Olive Garden type bullshit? | |

I hope, neither. I find Olive Garden to be mediocre, and BBQ is best created at home.

Hell, I do nothing but bitch on this site... and even I don't hate Hays. I think it's a nice little town. Kinda cliquey and backward... but I reckon that's what you'd expect of any smallish town.

Because I lived 3 hours away and my father was dying. Anyway on to the list: Housing sucks Serious lack of shopping Serious lack of variety in food places Wages suck Very little to do if you aren't a bar fly Serious lack of culture, the art walk doesn't cut it Everyone knows your damn business Good ole boy network is thriving

| The wages and cost of living does suck in Hays. So does lack of places to buy necessary, or wanted things. Recreation is limited and I get tired of event planners thinking entertainment "must" pertain to low end redneck motorsports or tone deaf hillbilly bands. And some new place to eat or drink doesn't sound one bit exciting.
But on the other hand, guns are ok here and local govenment still hasn't decided that gay makes right or that the entire city must observe Martin Luther Day. Political correctness is creeping in, and radical feminism rears it's ugly head here and there, but it is still legal here to be a straight white guy with a gun and not feel ashamed of it.

I meet that criteria, but I would have to look for my shotgun. Perhaps it is better that it remains where it is, but I'd like to shoot it again before I'm ashes.

| I havn't been out to shoot lately either. I prefer cooler weather for it. Ellis had something different at this years Riverfest and so did other area towns. An anvil shooter came to town. While that too is high on the list of redneck sports it at least doesn't involve watching one hillbilly crash his car or combine into another. And seeing a 104 pound anvil fly 235 feet straight up higher than the grain elevator was just cool as hell. | |

These are just a few of the things Well I can't argue with most of those- although I'd say that most of them are true of any small town. Hell, several of those are nearly as true of Wichita. The only place where I'd differ is 'culture'. Now you and I may mean two different things by 'culture', but from my perspective ya'll Chermins have a pretty intact culture... at least compared to Deliverance Country where I come from. Yeah, it's kinda hokey and beer-centric... but ya'll have your own music, your own cooking style, your own wedding style, a shared history, etc. That may not be your thing (it definitely isn't MY thing), but I think it's pretty worthwhile for some people. Hays really does have a way of pulling people 'back'. Not sure why. Some of my wife's folks are from the area, and she went to college there. Moved away for a few years... then found herself there AGAIN for several years while getting her master's degree. After that was finished she was good and ready to leave. I was- and still am- kinda ambivalent about Hays. It's one of the better places I've lived... but that 'small town' thing does get old. Anyhow I hope you find a place that suits you. I really liked Colorado when I lived there... but it was expen$ive. Maybe I'll move back there when I finish school in a few months and land that Dream Job. - Ratzilla wrote:

Yeah, Ratzilla... just step across the Ellis County line in any direction and you'll find yourself on the campus of U. C. Berkeley... stretching from border to border/ coast to coast. | Bighead is right about one thing Hays has this way of pulling people back. I just recently moved back to Hays from KC. I learned the city life really wasn't for me. Sure the city had all those different places to eat at and more shopping available. What I learned though is that even though those things were right in front of me I still didn't patronize those places as much as what I do what I visit there. I was back in KC this past weekend and it was great for a couple of days and of course I was ready to come back. I also looked at it from this perspective, if I was right out of college and moved to KC I would have probably like it better but now that Im a bit older I guess that I must be set in my ways and not willing to adapt to the "Johnson County profile".

When they had that little Chipotle luncheon at the armory a while back, there was an article in the newspaper that quoted a Chipotle executive as saying Hays wasn't going to get one. But then again, it was more than a few minutes ago, so you wouldn't remember that. But maybe you could contact Chipolte. Your posts are starting to remind me of a certain SAC.

Trust me, with the exception of a few bigger towns Western KS is still very conservative in nature for the most part. And you really need to quit listening to liberal propaganda. I have no problem with anyone so long as they don't try to make me change my ways or give up something for their benefit, or to hold power over me. And that last statement applies to my fellow Chermins as well as anyone else.

| Knoxville TN? I lived there for a little while, and grew up in an adjacent county. It's not a bad town depending on what you want. But in East Tennessee, the further you get from Knoxville- the stranger the people get (and the more likely you are to run into my kinfolk). Hays has it's problems, but the people there are relatively sane in my experience. I dunno if a Haycite can comprehend the depth and breadth of crazy to be found in them there hills in southern Appalachia. | |

We've had a few here in this part of KS that might surprise you. From sadistic killers to just downright bizarre characters that might match even the most inbred hillbilly. Though I'll grant you that after visiting rural Alabama I think being peculiar is a way of life in some places.

Because as much as we tried, in the beginning, to keep things on topic, nothing worked. So most threads take a 6° of separation, turn. That's just how it's worked (or not - depending on your view) in the Hays forums. It just is what it is...

Actually, I've heard within the past week that Hays is getting a Buffalo Wild Wings.
