| had gotten the roller skating rink plans out and added a stage for live entertainment, called about the Old Walmart space and found another contractual hitch. Our friends at Hastings will have no recreational competition adjacent to or near their business. One other entrepneure had enquired before to put in a NEW bowling alley only to find out the same. | A fancy bowling alley might be cool, except the state of KS has legalized discrimination and I'm no longer welcome in public places. | |

| Personally I like to take a big dump right in the middle of the floor when I go out in publik. But them discriminatory bastards always call the cops on me... makes it so a man might as well just stay home rather than face such onerous discrimination.
Does Hastings own the old Walmart building? If not... then why do they have any say as to what's done with it?

| I'm afraid taking a dump on the floor of a public place is not in the same category as passing a law saying that a property owner has no right to make a special ventilated room for smokers. They aren't likely to pass a law saying you can only crap in your own home, so you can stink up any public toilet you want. And I guarantee I've seen guys who put out a far more offensive smell in the toilet than any cigarette ever made. | |

| I agree. I think property owners should have every right to install a ventilated area where I may take a dump in the middle of the floor in peace. If they don't want that sort of thing, that's their business. But if they do, then bygod it's my Right As An American to shit where I see fit.
I mean yeah, other customers can still smell it and employees will still be exposed to any health risks involved... but they can always go elsewhere and/or quit, respectively. Home or the brave goddamn it!
Sure I can still shit in a bathroom. Or maybe outside or in my own house... places where it won't bother anybody. But it's discrimination unless I may shit anywhere and anyhow I please. Fukin PC sonsobitches.

He's got more than that if he thinks there's a comparison to that and smokers having a separate ventilated smoke room that would only bother the whiners who don't want them to have it. I expect his compaison is more to be annoying than make an actual point. Or maybe leaving a pile in the middle of the floor is an Appalachian hillbilly custom the rest of us don't know about.

| Yeah, just getting a rise outta you for the most part. Although I do find the 'discrimination' angle to be pretty damn whiny.
In theory I kinda agree with you. IMO, whether or not smoking is allowed should be up to the business. That said, I just don't care a whole lot... and I can acknowledge that there are valid health concerns for both tha publik and people who work in said businesses.
But back to the topic at hand: Does Hastings own that old Walmart building? I can't imagine why they WOULDN'T want to attract more people to that end of town. Seems like it'd be a win/win. Or is this the standard Hace mentality of 'hell no' to any proposed change?

| So what do you call excessively taxing a product used by about 20% of the population and then also barring business owners from building smoke rooms COMPLETELY ISOLATED FROM AND SAFE for the non-smoking patrons if it's not discrimination? Selective screwing?

| I've made attempts to quit, and it's taken a toll on my health. But being forced to by government restrictions and excessive taxing only makes smokers want to tie politicians, and the jerks who refuse to compromise to chairs and force them to inhale our smoke until they puke.
My nephew says there's places now that are building pretty nice fenced outdoor areas with fireplaces for smokers that are kinda cool to hang out in. I wonder how long it will be before non-smokers see we're having fun in them and demand that those only be accessible to them too?
See, that's where my complaint comes in. It's just like the jerks who want high fat content removed from everything. They've decided that just because they don't want something, nobody should have it. Only their visions of the "pretty person" matters now.
By the way Blackie. I don't smoke anywhere in my own home except upstairs so as not to bother others coming in the house. And I only will smoke in anothers vehicle if they don't mind it, and not even then if it's a nice clean vehicle. I will ask them to stop now and then on long trips so I can have one though. I just get tired of willingly trying to compromise and then being screwed over for my efforts.

| I'm willing to compromise by taking a dump in the corner... but nooooo... people won't have THAT either. How long 'til I can't even shit in a bathroom?? One thing that you fail to acknowledge, Ratzilla, is that smoking necessarily affects other people- and not in a good way. I've been to plenty of places that had separate and ventilated smoking areas... and the place still smelled like an ash try. Not only that, but people work in these places. It's a health hazard that workers were (and are in the case of casinos) being unnecessarily exposed to. As for smoking indoors, I think it's just nasty. The only time I ever smoke indoors is maybe at a bar or something- otherwise I go outside. But I'm not nearly as dedicated to my nicotine as some folks... I often go for weeks or months at a time without any. The fat analogy doesn't work very well. Not much danger of second-hand fat exposure. | |

There's plenty of danger of a fat guy keeling over at the wheel from a heart attack and plowing into you head on. But that's besides the point. Apparently you were never in place with a properly built smoke room.

| You're trying to side step the point. The state didn't say only tested and approved smoking rooms would be allowed. They said "NO" attempt to make a warm and dry indoor place for smokers would be allowed.
Meanwhile we can all continue to ummmm "enjoy" all the insect repellants and putrid colognes, perfumes, air fresheners, and other chemical based odiferous concoctions some folks find pleasant.

| Like I said, I agree with you in theory. And particularly if we're talking about a specifically constructed 'smoke room'... I think I remember seeing one of those at an airport somewhere. To me that should be MORE than adequate to deal with the smoke.
Again, I'm not saying that I really support this law as written. But I am pointing out that 'smoking sections' in restaurants often are not well-contained at all... AND people have to work in those areas. So while I reckon that we're all adults here and should be able to do what the hell we want so long as we're not hurting anybody... I'm acknowledging that there's a legitimate gripe here.
And the fact remains that I just don't care a whole lot. You really should just quit smoking if it bothers you that much. Between the Camels and being pissed off all the time, your blood pressure has got to be through the roof.

| I really don't think we are that far apart here. I understand smoking bans in resturants, hospitals, schools and the like. Can't say that I see someone who frequents bars being that worried about their health, but I think an isolated smoke room in bars would be good.
It sure doesn't make sense for government to complain about smokers illnesses and then pass laws saying we have to go out in freezing cold and rain to smoke though. Maybe they hope we'll all get pneumonia and die.
Oh, and I've tried to quit a few times. Every time I did someone close to me died, so now I'm kinda paranoid to even try.

| Yes because we all know what a quality bookstore Hastings is. That place is a piss poor excuse for a bookstore. I cant tell you how many times Ive went out there in search of a book and they dont have it. Its always "We can order it for you." Im like I can do that myself online thanks. If I had the money Id build a big assed Barnes & Noble or Border store right out there near them. They wouldn't last a week. Re: The smoking thing I really wish the non smokers that complain all the time would STFU for once. We can no longer smoke indoors in 99% of the places in this state and we are taxed more than any other fricken vice, so please just SHUT UP. Next it will be illegal to stand outside in your own yard and smoke. | |

Considering I dont smoke in anyone's homes or cars, or places of business, Id say no you have no rights beyond that. You people have approximately 90% of the state smoke free and thats all you need. Ive always wondered if you fanatics throw a fit around campfires and fireplaces too?

| I was just reading up on asthma, COPD, and other respiratory issues and what is dangerous to those who have them.
Yet you can have someone drop you off within a few feet of the door to a business as their car chugs exhaust, walk in with a raging cold, pet hair all over your clothes, and wearing perfume or cologne so potent it makes your eyes water. As you walk in the door the employee might be spraying air fresheners, bug spray, or burning incense. There might be a haze of smoke in the air from a fireplace, or cooking. The place might be dusty or have fumes in the air from recent painting or construction. Pollen producing potted plants might be everywhere. And any number of cleaning compounds might be in use.
Nobody thinks a thing of sitting among all these health risks, yet a ventilated smoke room separate from the rest of the patrons is just terrible. What a stupid country we've become.

Some stink before they go in a smoky place. Which is also another topic. But just for the record, I voluntarily keep the first floor of my home smoke free so that non smokers won't be bothered. There are several perfumes, colognes, and "room fresheners" that make me nauseous. A few stronger scents literally make it hard for me to breath. I have yet to have any stinky cologne wearer or potpourri user quit using them because it bothers me, much less any laws passed taxing the users of them higher or banning their use. And I unlike the nonsmoker, am not about to demand they run their home or business to suit me. I've noticed a trend too. Alot of non smokers insist on deluging their homes and businesses with so many potent aromatics that it's overwhelming. My parents used to refer to it as smelling like a French whore.

| I suppose some of them gals smell quite nice. But I don't think the folks were always referring to nice smelling ones when they said something smelled like a French whore. I think they usually meant the intensity was too much.
But nevertheless, unlike so many nonsmoking fragrance obsessed individuals I have never even considered asking for a law that forbids them to stink up their own property.
