| Rumpus: Would you suppose that Facebook employees might read people’s messages? Employee: See, the thing is — and I don’t know how much you know about it — it’s all stored in a database on the backend. Literally everything. Your messages are stored in a database, whether deleted or not. So we can just query the database, and easily look at it without every logging into your account. That’s what most people don’t understand. http://therumpus.net/2010/01/conversations-about-the-internet-5-anonymous-facebook-employee/?full=yes | |

| It wouldn't be that hard for them to figure out who the employee was, especially if the reporter had visited as her guest. She would have been fired to giving out the information that she revealed, assuming it's even true.
Not that I doubt that information is being saved on Facebook users, but with three hundred million users across the world, what would make anyone think that they'd be the slightest bit interested in them? If you're really paranoid enough to think they're out to get you, then Facebook saving your posts isn't your biggest problem.
I'd be more concerned with spammers and hackers than Facebook employees.

If you think the government gives a Ratzilla's ass about what you're posting on Facebook unless you're giving details about an unsolved crime, then you have a false sense of importance. And if you're a criminal and you're stupid enough to be posting incriminating things on Facebook, you deserve whatever fate becomes you.

| Glad to know you trust Obama with powers like The Patriot Act EP. I'd agree with you except that who knows who the government is going to call a criminal next. We both know full well that each party likes to cause trouble for those who disagree with their particular line of propaganda. But unless a Facebook employee is also an identity thief I say the biggest problem with Facebook is that there's spam lures in there everywhere you look. | |

But unless a Facebook employee is also an identity thief I say the biggest problem with Facebook is that there's spam lures in there everywhere you look. Here's a few things from my current Facebook live feed. You tell me what the government would have any interest in. "I hate being allergic to work." "became a fan of KD Country 94 & Z-96.3 The Lake and FarmVille Petition - We All Want More Than 1 Chicken Coop In Our Farm!!!" "is taking care of her 179 zoo animals!" “'Our real discoveries come from chaos, from going to the place that looks wrong and stupid and foolish.'-Chuck Palahniuk" "Watch an emotional message from David Ortiz urging fans to support victims of the earthquake in Haiti by donating to UNICEF." "If you can only eat half of a filet (the lady's cut) then I'd call it a little girl's cut." "George & Reba tickets are ExPeNsIvE for Wichita concert. Oh well, I'm still GOING!!!! YAY I LOVE GEORGE, he's so SEXY!!! " "How is Anderson Cooper staying so fresh in Haiti? Does he fly to Jamaica every night to stay at Sandals?"

Actually, I think this is a great observation. Funny, too. You know the people of Haiti are all saved now that Anderson Cooper and Geraldo are there on the ground.

| Yeah I "hide" all notifications from those crapola applications everytime I see one. Now my news feed is pretty clean, just things that people have said or done in real life. | |

I thought about that, but we didn't want friends and family to think we didn't want to interact with them. We've just been ignoring most of it. I've gotten used to it so it's no big deal, but it still confuses mom as to what to do about things that ask for permissions, or want her to click links. Otherwise I agree that facebook has allowed me to connect with friends, classmates, and family not seen in ages and that's great.

Otherwise I agree that facebook has allowed me to connect with friends, classmates, and family not seen in ages and that's great. The farm things, mafia wars, fish crap, etc... has nothing to do with interacting with those who play those games. All that blocking those apps does is keep from showing when so and so kills a snake, eats a fish, builds a barn, etc. Everything your family members posts to their walls themselves will still show up on yours, as long as you don't block the actual person instead of the app. LOL... Also, I don't care who "posts" it, anything with a tinyurl link, I don't click on. If it looks hinky, it probably is. Send the person on whose wall the post came from, an email asking if they posted it or not. A lot of times, they don't know they've been spammed/hacked/whatever, until someone gripes to them about something they received from the "sender".

| What I was talking about is like say "you" invited me to play a game, or said something about me that I have to "earn points" by visiting sponsors etc. to see. If someone tells you how great some game is and you don't want in, or tries to get you into a group they sometimes get po'd if you don't. I realize that's their issue, but if facebook focused on the connecting instaed of putting so much emphasis on role playing and spamming I'd like the place more.
I left the old chat circuit because everybody and their dog thought they had to be part of fantasy role play rooms and fewer and fewer wanted to just shoot the bull about reality.

| Honestly, those invites are usually sent out en masse to one's whole friend list. The sender likely won't care if you accept it or not. | |
