Oz, my son, her brother and her mother all joined me at The Phog tonight to watch KU beat Fort Hays State, 107-68.
Despite the score, it looks to me like FHSU will do okay this year. They may be a legitimate challenger for the MIAA title. People in Hays should try to get out and support them.
Coach Self was visibly upset at his team's sloppy play and lack of effort at times. I'd guess that they will put on a clinic next Tuesday against Pittsburg State.
Hays High graduate Jordan Juenneman played the final 3:30 for the Jayhawks. He had 2 points, an assist and a steal.

DZ where were you? I feel like I was the only one applauding for FHSU.
Who was the FHSU player that shot his free throws--and made them--with just one hand.
My niece and I have plans to attend FHSU b-ball games when I come back to visit. I can't wait!

We were in section 19. There was a former FHSU player sitting 2 rows in front of me, and about 5 people up in the top of section 20 that were cheering for Fort Hays... I even wore a FHSU t- shirt. I can't remember the name/ or number of the player with the interesting shot, very strange, but effective! I'm hoping we can catch a game or two when we're home for the holidays!

Hey, we were in section 19, too. Hemenway, the former chancellor, was about three rows in front of us across the aisle in section 18. Fast Eddie came over to see him for a while. If that was the new chancellor's husband sitting with Eddie across the way, he looks like Grady from Sanford & Son.

If you can get tickets, the last three games before New Year's should all be good. Michigan on Dec. 19th, California on the 22nd and Belmont on the 29th. Yes, the same Belmont who upset them in the tournament a few years ago. They're ranked #10 in the preseason poll. Of course there's always Missouri in January, Oklahoma in February or K-State in March, which will also be Senior Night for Sherron.

We were about 1/4 of the way up in the second level. There was a very large woman right in front of Oz. The chick with the crutches who came in after the game started went down our row. You would have recognized Oz. Her face looked like a Minolta for most of the game.

Hmmm... Guess you just never know who you're sharing your space with! How funny that we were sitting so close together. Did you see the cute little girl with the beautiful hair in the KU cheer outfit? She danced and cheered all through the game. She was a couple of rows in front of us. Oz started out wearing a FHSU sweatshirt, but she changed several times before we left the house and ended up in a KU t-shirt. She thought it would be too warm for a sweatshirt, then she froze on the way back to the car.

K-State finally won, 83-76, but who would have thought that Fort Hays State would stay with a Big 12 team, a team that has been getting votes for the D-I Top 25 every week?
Frank Martin was pissed in the post-game interview. He said that he's either going to get his players to buy in or he's going to get them to quit the team.
I can't wait to see the ass-kicking that KU lays on K-State on January 30th.
And those of you in Hays: Northwest Missouri State, the #2 ranked team in the nation in D-II, is in Hays to play the Tigers next Wednesday night. That game is also FHSU's conference home opener. This team is worthy of your backing. If you don't have the money to pay the admission, or if you're just too cheap, listen to Mike Cooper on KAYS in the morning. I'm sure he still gives away tickets.

FHSU played hard and they played well. K-State just thought this was going to be an easy win for them. Au contraire.
Tickets are less than $10 to the FHSU games, right? At KU, general admission is $35. The place is always packed. Seeing a full house really helps boost the morale. I'm planning my next visit to Hays around an FHSU game...Dec. 12th. See you all there?

I kinda wondered if Alcorn State considered sneaking out of Allen Fieldhouse during a TV timeout.
K-State will lose on Saturday night. Washington State is good. They may lose their next 4 games, actually. They play Xavier next Tuesday at home. Xavier beat them last year, but it was in Cincinnati. On the 12th, they go to Las Vegas to play #21 UNLV. They'll lose that one. On the 19th, they play Alabama. They could well be looking at a 4-game losing streak when they get back to the cupcakes on the 21st against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Hopefully it turns out that way.
Sunday's matchup between KU and UCLA should have been the premier game of this year's Big 12/Pac 10 Hardwood Series. However, UCLA is not the team that beat the Hawks in the Elite 8 three years ago. In fact, they suck. They already have a loss to Cal State-Fullerton and were blown out by Portland State last week, 74-57. Things will get a little more interesting in Lawrence when Michigan and #25 California come to town on the 19th and 22nd, respectively. They also have road trips on Jan. 2 at Temple and Jan. 10 at #12 Tennessee.

So, whatever happened to calling traveling? The K-State/Missouri game is on, and I looked up from my book in time to see one of the players just running with the ball in both hands. The spouse said they don't call it anymore unless it's obvious. That was pretty obvious to me - someone who never watches sports on purpose. So... why is that?

The officials in that game are terrible. Both ways. No bias involved. I don't care who wins the game, either, as I dislike both schools. Most college officials will call the game pretty straight up. It's the NBA where it's really bad. Kobe Bryant could take a stroll to South Central, pick up a pizza and get in a gun fight with Gilbert Arenas, come back and dunk the ball and still not be called for anything as long as the dunk was SportsCenter material. I did see LeBron James called for traveling in the Cavs' game against the Nuggets last night, though, but only after he took four steps right in front of the Denver bench and the coaching staff went crazy.
Speaking of Gilbert Arenas, he admitted to having a handgun in his locker at the arena. Is it not illegal to have a handgun in DC? He's been suspended indefinitely by the league, but DC law enforcement has done nothing. Same offense that Plaxico Burress in prison for two years for committing in New York City.
With all the goings on in their locker room, the Wizards should change their name back to the Bullets.

Suzy asked why they don't enforce the traveling rules, and the reason is that fans seem to think some ego tripping player running up and slam dunking is more important than the traveling rules. To me it's stupid bitching about every call an official makes and then getting all excited when players break the rules, not to mention backboards, by hanging there after the shot like an ape in a zoo.
Sorry if it offends, but if the shoe fits....
You know, I really don't mind watching a basketball, or football game now and then. But players showing off by doing this or doing some stupid dance when they score a touchdown just doesn't appeal to me. I don't see what fans get out of watching Nascar winners create a cloud of smoke either, unless they get off on huffing burned rubber fumes. Sports is just too much of a circus and I guess that's why I can't take it as serious as some. I watch a little pro wrestling now and then, but at least I expect ass clowns there.
Sure I understand a player being excited by a good play. But there's a difference between a gesture that says "Yes, I made it" and being an attention whore. And sadly we seem to have become a nation of attention whores and their cheerleaders.
So to make a long story short, attention whores and their cheerleaders are why traveling rules are not enforced. The attention whores are nothing without the cheers, but yet die hard basketball fans bitch about traveling in games where the traveling is to get a good run to jump and put on the silly show they get off on. So why do I call fans stupid?

Taking more than 'a step and a half' without dribbling the ball is traveling. Moving your pivot foot once you've stopped dribbling is traveling. A layup is not traveling.
You can take 1.5-2 steps when doing a layup and it's not traveling.
