| How has yours been this summer? Good tomato crop this year. Some beautiful Celebrities and a lot of Romas. A few cukes (very few) and not a bad crop of yellow onions. I was going to title this post as "Yard'n'Garden," but I don't even want to talk about the yard. | |

| About a month ago, or maybe longer, I went out and "hoe'd" the garden. Then I got really busy with other things in my life and now the weeds are horrible. I think the hubby is taking care of it. lol I'm scared if I go out there, I might get lost.
PS I don't want to talk about our yard either!

| Cantaloupe is doing ok, and a fair number of tomatos, but watermelons are unusually small and pumpkins have had major trouble even though sprayed for bugs. Been an odd year. | |

Some varmint ate a bunch of my dad's onions so he pulled them all up that were left. I don't know if my dad planted any melons of any kind, but as sparse as the cukes were it was probably a good idea if he didn't.

| I heard cucumber beetles are troublesome this year. I think I had stem boers in the pumpkins because my spraying kept the squash beetles to a minimum. Why the watermelons are so small I can't say, but they are growing way slower than normal. | |

It does seem like the storms do a b-line around us, doesn't it? Why people planting new lawns decide to plant bluegrass and fescue in this part of the state is beyond me. My parents are guilty of the latter. The patches where the fescue dies is plush with Buffalo. Buffalo can be cut at almost the same height as fescue, but around the city they just freekin' scalp it. I have my reservations about Bermuda. I don't consider it a true, native, mid-western Kansas grass. That's a grass that needs to be scalped. I remember watching Terry Manell on the tube addressing the city commission when they were considering planting new grass in some park. He argued for a more native friendly grass and was shot down. The only goddamn time he chose to testify in front of them to do something sensible. The commissioner's response was, "The people want green grass." My oldest niece broke her ankle on that goddamn clumping K-31 fescue at the soccer fields. I heard once that Ellis requires a native grass on new lawns. Why can't we do that in Hays??

| Bermuda is a nuisance. It overgrows sidewalks and gardens, it's tough to mow if it gets tall, it's dead 6 months of the year, and builds up way over sidewalk level in time. The only good points are it takes heat well, and needs little water. Buffalo is low maintenance, easy mowing. It's warm weather grass too but it's great stuff. Both do poorly in shade though. | |

I don't want to know how you'd know that! Our garden is mostly a weed patch, because we thought we'd be able to get out and actually maintain it this year. Time got away from us, though. We've got a few tomatoes and a jalepeno and bell pepper. The onions, I don't even remember where my husband planted them. My son ran them over with the mower, and chopped the tops off.

WOW we are the exact opposite. Have got cukes coming out of our ears and the tomatoes have been terrible except for the cherry tomatoes. Corn was only fair what the raccoons didnt manage to eat. Had lots of green beans, peas, radishes, green onions and zuchinni. Only have one watermelon set on the entire plant and its growing pretty good. Have schwatzberry by the tons too.

| this is our first year at attempting a garden - we underestimated the area we planted in and we have an overgrowth of tomato plants, cucumber vines, squash vines and watermelon vines. Have lots of green tomatoes - only a few have turned for us. The rain has been great for us, except that we have to mow the yard twice a week and we have friggin gigantic mushrooms growing. Not to mention frogs are EVERYWHERE! | |

I brought a couple of those back here, from my mom's yard. They did great, until some black beetles from Hell (they literally swarmed out of a crack in the ground... there were hundreds of them) devoured everything in our garden 3 years ago. - slickjay12 wrote:
