New Registration

I opened the registration back up in order to let a few people in that wanted to be involved in the kindergarten thread. Within the day I have been spammed by new registrations, Hays1 through Hays16 and one by the name of "fools". I am not stupid, I know who it is. I apologize to Justoo and Suzyr who are also getting this spam in their emails. Do I allow the registration to still be open or am I forced to close it again because of one idiot?

Can you not just ban his IP? Thats what we did on the board I used to own. Banned the ip and then they cant even access the site.

he is banned as far as I can ban him and it still allows him to register.

What do you mean as far as you can ban him? Are the new reg ip addeys the same?

There is a button I push that says "ban user". That is all I can do.

You should have more than that in your acp. HAve you looked for both and email and an ip ban section?

I have, but I am afraid if I ban the IP for him (he uses multiple) that it will ban other people.

NB you should be able to see what ip everyone is using so you ought to be able to see if its going to affect someone else. Usually, and note that I said usually, a persons computer has its own ip address/es. You pretty much have a set number of user who logging in here daily at the moment, as long as none of them are running on the same ip as his, Id go ahead with the ban. If you accidently catch someone else in his ip ban they will probably get ahold of someone from the board via email and you can decide what to do from there, also during that time frame the idiot may decide to give up after he's been unable to even access the webpage due to the ban.

He is banned tho, has been many times and during these times he is still able to access the site.

If his ip address isnt banned then he isnt banned. Sent you a pm.

It's not killing me to just delete the new user emails. If you want to keep it open, it's cool with me. Eventually, he'll get bored with it and move on, like a petulant child.

Best of luck dealing with this guy. Ive nothing else to add, I did go so far as to check a few places to see if I could find a solution but I get the feeling my help isn't wanted so Im just going to stay out of it from this point on.

wow, are we a little touchy? My goodness, I am sorry I was trying to work on the issue myself. I normally don't respond to any PM's. I appreciate your help but I have to learn to work the place on my own.

L2C if he's using proxies he can have a new IP every time he comes in. He could look like he's in Florida one time, China the next, Russia next, Canada next, as fast as he can change it.

maybe we can uncover his real identity and location and pay him a little personal visit. or better yet, expose his personal info here. cowards like that usually back away when the light is placed on them

Used to be a couple online tracking services that sometimes gave great details of an IP origin. Sometimes it even gave apartment numbers and telephone number along with who the IP was assigned to. We used to use it in chatrooms and post all the info from anyone who's IP tried to contact our computers. One time we were arguing with some militant Muslim asswipes and suddenly all of us with Zone Alarm firewall started getting hits. We used the tracking and got names and addresses coming from Turkey. Soon as we posted it they left the room and never came back.

Spammed with new registrations again, pertaining to this thread in particular. This thread is not visible by a guest. Therefore someone else on the forum (an active member) is showing him new posts or has given him access to their account. If this does not stop I will be pursuing legal action.

wowzers... what actual cause is there for legal action? i'm just curious what crime has been committed. not tryin to agitate but it seems the guy was expressing his opinion in a manner unnacceptable, not sure what law was violated (rules of forum maybe).

let me rephrase that. Not legal action. I am contacting his service provider to have him banned.

Right or wrong, it's still her board. If she wants to ban him, she can. If you don't like it, there's always the solitude of the HDN board.

He spammed the site with obscenities which the moderators cleaned up in the wee hours of the morning. If you didn't checkout the site between 2:00 A.M. and 5:00 A.M. you probably did not bear witness to these acts. That was our goal when we cleaned up the site at 4:00 A.M.

He spammed the moderators with complaints about many other posters who had an occasional lapse in their verbage. If you have an issue with a post, please don't hesitate to bring it to our attention. But if we decide that it was within reasonable limits please don't carry on at great length and frequency about how unfair we are for not banning large numbers of posters.

He seemed to take pleasure in harassing certain posters.

He did not treat others with respect. Many of his posts were entertaining and/or informative. But many others were crude and insulting.

He was warned repeatedly. In fact he got 3 "last warnings" before we finally resorted to actually banning him. We do not take banning lightly. It is not at all the preferred way to handle a problem with a member of the board. However, when all else fails and they refuse to follow the rules we have no other options left.

Robert, don't fear the ban. I promise you will be well informed about any problems you may have with your posts. You will have the opportunity to inquire as to why we made a decision if it affects your post. You have not shown a tendency to verbal abuse others, so I don't think you have to worry about where the line is drawn.
