| Have any of you folks tried IE8.0? It's in beta, but it does show up in Windows Update. I had a lot of problems with it giving me error messages that it has stopped working and will be closed. This happened every single time I used it (Vista). I normally use Firefox but will use IE when some pages don't display properly. I uninstalled IE8 which took it back to IE7. I've rarely had the error problem with the latter. I'll try IE8 again when it comes completely off beta, but sheesh, what a pain in the backside for now.

| Gee, imagine that.... a new microsoft product having problems........ Thats why I always hate it when they "improve" a program...... just when I get the one I have been fighting to finally run with a minimum of problems, they come along and mess everything up with " improvements" | |

| It happens on IE7 and on XP too. Nowdays they just throw shit out ASAP and let the customer complaints find the bugs for them.
What a great system. Produce expensive programs as fast as you can and instead of spending time and money to test and perfect it, you use free at home testing labor that's paying you for the privilege to point out the problems.

| I have the problem also, but Vista and IE7 are the problem. I upgraded to IE8 and haven't had the problem...as much.
I don't think IE8 is still in beta. I couldn't find anywhere showing that it still was...I didn't look that hard, but they usually don't put beta programs in pushed out updates.

| I'm having trouble with Firefox. I switched to it because I was having problems with IE. Things keep timing out... again. Sucks! | |

| I think it may depend more on the computer, or virus and other bugs hiding in the system may play into things. If you run active x and java you do have bugs. | |

How would using active-x and java automatically indicate that a computer has bugs? Malicious bugs can exploit those programs if the user opens that door due to not being careful for whatever reason.

| Because I have yet to see a computer that a virus or other bug couldn't be found hiding on regardless of antivirus or other defenses, and scripts and active x controls can make installing malicious code easier to do and you don't even know you're downloading them. Granted modern systems may deal with those better now, and some browsers are less vulnerable.
To answer your question, JS and active x don't guarantee infected systems, but anything that makes the system less secure increases likelihood.

When ActiveX was first introduced in IE3.0 it had few security features. A page that specified an ActiveX control, IE3.0 would download and install the ActiveX control with minimal or no user intervention. Not a good thing. I think I'll give IE8.0 another go. If for nothing else to get rid of the update icon in my systray.

| IE8 seems to be working fine now. There was a glitch in the installation which I must have ignored the first time around. I found some information, fiddled with it for a while, and then the installation went without a hitch. Then Vista wanted to update to SP2 . . . 344MB worth. No problem there, either. Good to go. | |

| If it was an online install a glitch isn't uncommon. Discs copied off the net can really be a pain if it didn't DL smoothly. What annoys me is old factory program discs that I got back in the 90's had things that I'd like to use again but current systems won't recognize them. | |

| I turned off automatic updates about a year ago for Windows and IE. I use Firefox and Google Chrome all the time unless a page specifically says IE. | |

| I always turn off auto updates. They can take up alot of resources during a peak usage time, and bog things down. They can interfere with games, or downloads too, and I don't really care for crap going on behind the scenes. My mom likes the auto, so when possible I set her updates for like 3:00 AM. | |
