| They've completely cut it from the program in my district. They've cut all summer school. | |

Oh yeah? The horrors of summer school was the typical threat they used to get grades up when we were kids. So do they hold them back anymore for bad grades, or just pass them and say "It's ok, you're not a failure, you're just a special kind of winner"?

| My teacher mom says no child gets held back for failing any more. A study was done that showed there was no benefit to making the child repeat a failed grade. It only put the stigma that they were held back, on their shoulders. She doesn't agree with the policy. She just has to abide by it.
BTW.. they're keeping the weight room open for the jocks to continue their conditioning throughout the summer.

| No, the short bus is for the ones that try ten times harder but just can't quite do it right. The special limos with a cage in between the passenger and the officer is for the ones who just screwed off all year. | |

| SO you can get a learners permit with the course but not the restricted or full dl. IS that how that reads? Thats what they told me when I asked last summer. I was just going to teach her myself and they told me by state law she had to take the course. | |

| Driver's Ed is optional, L2C. You can get a learner's permit through the DMV, with the booklet to learn the rules of the road. With my boys, they had to log 50 hours of driving, with a percentage of that done as nighttime driving and highway driving. | |

My first driving lesson was when Dad took me out on Golf Course Road. When I went through the curves at a speed "slightly" uncomfortable for him it ended my lesson.

| As mentioned by others, it's cheaper to go through the D.E. course, for insurance purposes. We found that what makes more of a difference in the cost of insurance is the student maintaining a good GPA. Passing a driver's ed course is not required. | |

| I called out to the DMV and I was told that at 14 they can take the written test and get a permit. Then at 15 they can go back get a restriced and have to have so many hours logged and then 16 get a regular license. | |

| Ahh I can remember my drivers ed days. What's funny is i took it for insurance purposes also and i was already 15 and i drove myself to class. It was offered in the summertime. I was always trying to get the drivers ed teacher to let me use my car and he said no i had to use the school's car. Damn if i could go back to those wild DX days. | |

OK that is weird because I called them not 30 seconds ago and this is what I was told. - Quote :
"If they take drivers ed at 15 they can get a restricted license to drive to and from school and work and then get their regualr license at 16." So I then asked what happens if they dont take drivers ed? She said - Quote :
- "They can get a learners permit which they will have to keep until they are 16 at which point they can come out and take an actual drivers test with an officer and if they pass that they get a regular license."
Something is fishy about all this.

Something is fishy about all this. In the first example, the kid had a permit at age 14, then restricted at 15, then regular at 16. In the second example, the kid has a restricted license at 15, then a regular at 16 if they take drivers ed. In the third example, the kid has a permit until he is 16, at which time they can get a regular without taking drivers ed. So, the difference is the permit vs. restricted license, what is the difference? From what I read here (and assuming the DMV is being quoted accurately), if you take Drivers Ed, you can skip the permit.

| When I called they said that you don't have to take drivers ed, you just have to take the written test to get a learners permit. After that at 15 you go in and take the drivers test and can get a restricted. I didn't ask when the hours come into play. My son hasn't studied enough for me to take him in yet. Even though he says he knows everything, lol | |

| I took my son (14) in the other day and he took the written test and the drivers test and passed. He now has a farm permit and can drive to and from work and to and from school. Plus he has to log in a jillion hours before he turns 16. | |
