| Classified employees will get screwed. Unclassified employees, who average two times the pay of classified, would be untouched.
The House budget committee Thursday approved a jaw-dropping plan to slash salaries of all state employees by 5 percent. The mandatory one-year rollback endorsed by the House Appropriations Committee would save the state at least $40 million, with the average reduction pegged at $1,600 for each state classified employee.Link to story

| Of course they should! In fact it should be a lot more! Don't they realize how bad they make "Octomom" and the likes look by being able waste money on fancy things like insurance, energy bills, food, and gas while not being on the government dime. Who the hell do they think they are?!
We're NEVER gonna get Nationalized Healthcare passed if this keeps up!!

Poor baby.... I just submitted a bunch of info to see how my pay compares around the state based on my job title, years on the job, and training/experience. I'm at $12.25 sitting on the very bottom of the pile. Top of the range is $18.39 with the average at $15.18. Ellis County wages suck. GRRRRRRR

| the 13.00 an hour I make is lower then the 15.00-20.00 the master control operators in the other 2 PBS sites make. I did not even compare my wages to the for profit stations

Ellis County wages suck. GRRRRRRR Yes they do. I took a 40% pay cut when I moved to Hays. And got a 50% raise when I left. I started here in Wichita making damn near twice what I started at in Hays. At an easier job. With better benefits.

| I know of a way they could save some money on the budget. Get rid of a lot of the cars that the state owns and maintains. That would result in a cost of fuel and insurance at least | |

| Yeah Bighead, My niece used to live in Wichita making $18.00 an hour and said her overall cost of living was cheaper than in Hays. No real competition in Hays business. She only moved back here because of aging family in poor health and to get her kids away from the gang element.
Luke, if the state took everyone on the welfare roles that are not physically or mentally disabled and put them behind a broom/shovel/lawn mower/etc., it'd do alot. FDR catches alot of flak from conservatives like Stoney Limbaugh for his welfare programs, but the WPA projects and CCC camps of the 30's produced a great many of the structures, roads, and parks we still use today. They worked for their welfare as it should be today.

| I got a 25k raise when I moved to Hays, Also, the cost of living here is freaking cheap. The lack of competition serves some of us well.
If any of you would buy my house in Ohio you would accomplish two things. I would put more of my money in the local economy here in Hace and you would see why you really have very little to bitch about after spending a bit of time in Ohio.

| You obviously didn't transfer from one factory job to another if you gained that much. And my complaint isn't here verses other states. I know other states are worse. My complaint is that this area doesn't compete with Eastern KS.
You may not be aware of it but years ago there was a big blowup about local politicians blocking better paying jobs from coming in because some business owners didn't want to have to raise their employees wages. And while wages were kept down, housing costs doubled at an accelerated rate. Many of those homes and apartments belonged to the same business owners who didn't want to pay higher wages. So yes, locals have a legit complaint.

| So this place is catching up to the rest of the country after all.
Well with any luck people will abandon the larger cities as they collapse on themselves and either stay out here or relocate to areas like this. Shitty part is "ol Boss Hogg is still gonna have his hands in your pockets because he owns everything.
The price of real estate may have sky rocketed here but it's still 2 times the house for the money in most other markets.
I know it sucks for the locals because of what they were used to but I have a hard time seeing the logic in the fact that I moved from places where you get (metaphorically) 4 slices of bread for what you get a loaf for out here and people complaining. There is obviously a history I don't know but I'm not sure that you DO know that this place is a fucking Utopia.

| I won't argue at all that there's far worse places than here. But that might be due to the fact that we do keep complaining when we don't like how it's going. | |
