Be sure to use those towelettes to wash the germs off the shopping cart. Test show the carts are amongst the three highest germ carriers. Now I won't eat food that had sat in the cart, not bagged. They show that even feces are in the carts!!! Our stores need a sanitizing system. One of the other ones is, the hand rails on pubic transportation. Carts is what we need to be concerned about.

The modern industrialized world is obsessed with hygiene. There is undoubted benefit to this cleanliness (other than its putative divine propinquity) - crowding together in cities, airports, schools, and shopping malls creates a friendly playground for viruses and bacteria, and good hygiene is the best prevention against infection.

But perhaps we are heading toward having too much of a good thing. From watching TV commercials you would think that the goal of healthy living is to have a germ-free environment. Clean your hands regularly with anti-bacterial soap, wash all surfaces with germ-killing agents, keep your food vacuum packed, and don’t play in the dirt.

There are those who think this obsession has gone too far - that lack of exposure to germs is turning us into Asimov’s Spacers. In addition to having weakened immune systems it has been proposed that excess hygiene is leading to increased incidence of allergies, asthma, and other immune disorders, including type I diabetes. This is the so-called hygiene hypothesis (here is a good summary of the possible mechanisms).

Now new research in mice give support to the hygiene hypothesis (here is the technical paper in Nature, and here is a press discussion of the paper). Essentially what the researchers shows is that exposing a certain kind of mice to bacteria similar to the bacteria found in the human gut reduced their incidence of type I diabetes, presumably by reducing immune dysfunction.

What all this likely means is that there is a range of optimal exposure to germs: too much leads to excessive and possibly dangerous infections; too little and the immune system is out of whack. In practice this means that we should be clean but not sterile. A little dirt is a good thing.

Actually their cheaper for those who don't have any health insurance, like me. And they taste good but I'm wondering if they need to be fresh, or if they can be canned.

I'm not a germ freak... but I do wash my hands often. And I do notice if others wash thier hands if they will be touching my stuff I'm buying! I was waiting for the rest room at a store in O.K. The lady came out after hearing a flush... but the sink was dry to the bone and trash can was out side of rest room and she didn't have paper towels to dry her hands... I didn't buy any thing in that store. It took all I had not to say something to her in front of ""every one that was in her line"" buying food and vegetables from her.. Took all I had! Some pediatricians are skeptical that the germ threat from shopping carts poses a risk greater than other public surfaces.

In some cases, the quicker a child is exposed to bacteria, the quicker the child can build an immunity, said José Alvarado, chief of pediatrics at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.

"We're too overzealous about avoiding all forms of bacteria as a society today," he said.

germs and bacteria are just a part of life we will never be able to totally avoid. Sometimes I think by trying to use disinfectants at every turn in life we make the germs stronger and weaken our own immunities in the process as we don't let our systems keep pace with the evolution of the germs

Alright, there is one thing I do to make sure my family doesn't get sick. I wash all produce before it's eaten, if it will be eaten raw. If it's going to be cooked, the heat from cooking will likely kill any bacteria living on it. That's it.

I know, this has aleardy been said in posts above...

*We all need to be exposed to "germs" in order for our bodies to build up an immunity to them. If we're over diligent with "de-germing" everything, we're more likely to get sick.

For thousands of years, people got sick and died for no apparent reason. Eventually they figured out that exposure to a sick person may cause you to get sick, hence leper colonies and quarantining of plague victims. It has only been in relatively recent history that people have figured out that microscopic organisms can overtake and subdue the mighty human body. Some people go overboard with germophobia, but protecting yourself with reasonable measures seems to make sense.

That's plain disgusting, but it's a lot more common than you think. The little signs in the restrooms that read "EMPLOYEES MUST WASH HANDS BEFORE RETURNING TO WORK" wouldn't be there if health departments and employers didn't know it's a problem. Unfortunately, employees very often ignore them or just don't care enough about their own health or the health of others to put out the minimal effort to help prevent the spread of disease.

Two keys words, there. Who defines reasonable measures?
I agree, wash your hands after visiting the toilet, that's a no-brainer. Wash your fruits and vegetables. Again, we all probably should, especially after this past summer's e-coli incident.
I'm living with my son who HAS to use hand sanitizer after he touches anything if he doesn't have gloves (he makes his own hand sanitizer now, we have no idea what all he puts in it). He HAS to use food service gloves to put something in the trash. He HAS to use food service gloves when he opens the door to let the dog out. WE have to wash our hands after opening a door he's touched (if he doesn't have gloves handy) because he has so much crap on his hands, to keep the germs off, that it leaves the door knob slimy and gross. We're living with a clinical germaphobe, and it's very frustrating! So, I have this tendency to lean the other way... the way we lived 30+ years ago where we weren't afraid to touch something for fear of getting someone else's cooties.

Me and a friend (an RN) were just talking about this 5 second rule the other day. She said that if the food is wet it will get more germs on it than say a dry cookie. She also said that carpet will have more germs on it than say a wood floor. I wouldn't eat anything that was dropped on my floor, besides that the dog will get it. Cool

Also little sidebar. I have 2 sisters - all 3 of us have kids. My 2 sisters are complete and utter germphobes. Me, not so much. Their kids have been sick AT LEAST 5 times per year. My last kid is 15 and had been on antibiotics a grand total of 4 times in her life. Same can be said for her older 2 siblings.

Crutch is absolutley right on this. Blame both the doctors and the patients. The doctors are put in the position of feeling that they "have" to give the patient who came to see them something, so they feed out more antibiotics whose misuse causes the arrival of the superbug. The overactive patient thinks they should feel top notch at all times and that there is a pill for everything.

A child has to develop immunity by being exposed to germs.

Why you worried about shopping carts? Jeffrey Dahmer worked in a chocolate factory and may have kept a head in his locker. Who knows if the guy at McDonalds or KFC just picked his nose before handling your dinner. A guy I knew that worked in a traditional pizza place said in the summer it was real hot and the dough would get all over their sweaty arms while they kneaded it. If we only knew.

That place is nasty! I ate there for the first and only time about five years ago when my parents were visiting. There was a woman mixing a large barrel of salad with her ungloved hands in plain view and the guy cooking the burgers and steaks looked like he hadn't showered in months. Never went back. I heard the one in Topeka is worse, too.
