A joint venture between Royal Dutch Shell and Iraq's state-owned South Gas Co. could give Shell a 25-year monopoly on production and exports of natural gas in much of southern Iraq - the biggest foreign role in Iraq's oil and gas sector in four decades...

I hate to be the voice of moderation here. REALLY, I do.

But I don't honestly believe that there was an overt conspiracy to invade a sovereign country, kill hundreds of thousands of brown people, and take their oil.

However, to butcher Eisenhower, I think that certain monetary interests (including both the oil industry and the defense industry) create a willingness to go to war that wouldn't otherwise exist. So while I DO reckon that in some sense our 4000 Amerikans and the several hundred thousand brown people HAVE died for $$$ and political gain... I DON'T believe that our leaders are that simple-minded or outright scheming. I think these war-hungry neocons are arrogant, dishonest, and horribly misguided... the RESULTS of their actions might as well be called 'evil'. But I just can't bring myself to believe that they brought about this destruction intentionally.

One can only hope that the neocons responsible will be brought up on war crimes charges

You are correct. What's really at play here is that too many opportunities for things those in power like doing came together at once. Among them are....

Kissing Israels butt.
Getting more military presence in the region.
Oil companies, and numerous other US companies can profit.
GW's daddy was made a fool of.
Dwindling world oil supplies and increasing tough oil dealings.
Russia, France, and Germany were poised to get those oil reserves.
Saddam wasn't cooperating.
War means defense contractors prosper.
It lured thousands of radical Muslims into Iraq to join the fight.
The Cold War and competition for territory with Russia never really ended.
Since they banned burning witches killing Muslims is the best adrenaline rush Christians have.
