| Has anyone besides me noticed that more and more the library is not a place of quiet and solitude? The last few times Ive been in there it was a bloody zoo! Tons of middle school kids running wild and all but yelling. The "young adult" section is ridiculous. I mean Im all for promoting new programs in order to get kinds into the library to promote READING, not screw off on the computer time or having the building used as a babysitter. | |

| As long as it's not too crazy, I'd rather see the kids hanging out at the library messing on those computers than sitting in someones dark basement doing drugs and watching porn. | |

| Oh come ON, Im sure we'd all rather see that Ratz, however my point is Im about middle school kid'd to death. To me it seems like you cant go anywhere anymore without having to deal with a group of loud obnoxious middle school kids. And I do myself have one of those. Im just saying I really think that the library of all places should at least be one place where a person can not have to deal with this. | |

| Not yet, debating whether or not it would do any good. Much as I thought the skating rink was just a big ole make-out hidey hole for these kids, I really wish it was back so they'd go hang out there. I know that sounds bad..... | |

| The kids need not hang out((running in and out, yelling and such, which I have seen a few times))or even reading at the library, with out their parent's watchful eyes.. Library's have become a hunting ground for perverts .. Hays has hopefully hired security. Can you tell I'm a parent?? Well Grandma now! I know it's bad in the city's. So please protect your kids KIDS BE GOOD AT THE LIBRARY, PLEASE!

Are you kidding me? Or is a "libary" different from the "library"? LOL Seriously though, what the heck is going to happen in a crowded library? Just because there's bookish types in there that resemble PeeWee Herman doesn't mean they are going to grab you kids and drag them behind a bookshelf. If you know of real incidents in the Hays Library, let's hear them. I havn't. I'd be more likely to believe the teenagers might be doing things to each other.

Yeah, all I've ever seen anyone do in a library is read, talk, or use a computer. Maybe there are issues in big cities where there's lots of dark corners in huge libraries, but I've never seen, or heard of it here. Like I say on the noise issue, if it's getting that wild I'd talk to the staff.

| I have a daughter that is in the 7th grade and goes to the library after school. She is actually there as I type this. I dont see what the problem is with middle schoolers being at the library. Atleast they are not out in the community being destructive and destroying your property. | |

| Putting all joking aside, I did watch on the News that perverts (not the word they used) do stalk kids at the library. Thank God it's not in Hays!!! I'm not great on the computer, so I don't know how to look it up. It was on the news (CBS) about 6 to 8 months ago. I enjoy using the Hays library. I take my grand kids there. Sorry, I don't have the Proof!! | |

| A friend of mine used to work at the Hays Public Library. She said the behavior of children and young adults who don't have adult supervision is often a concern for library staff. On many occasions she was frustrated as she felt she spent more time as a "babysitter" than she did fulfilling her duties as a librarian. | |

There's no problem at all as long as they arent running around and being loud and obnoxious which is the case about 70% of the time. The library isnt there as an after-school-keep-your-kids busy destination.

Oh I don't doubt it may happen. I was just surprised you were worried about the Hays Library. It's well lit, busy, and right beside alot of cops. And from the stories we see in the news nowdays, I think alot of the "perverts" your kid may come in contact are other kids. It's getting crazy.

You are missing my point completely, I could care less if they go to the library, what I have a problem with is them being loud and obnoxious IN THE LIBRARY.

| BOHICA? Now who taught you that?
Libraries in general have become the dumping ground of kids whose parents need a ready made baby sitter. Yet, slowly libraries and museums are changing their role more as a form of entertainment rather than an institution of learning. Is this bad? I guess it depends if you're the director of either one. If you are, then it's necessary to keep your numbers up which is critical to funding through grants or the local government. It's becoming more and more necessary to reinvent yourself annually. Otherwise, you become stagnant and you lose numbers which in turn costs you funding and in the current economic climate, that's a bad thing. Not to mention, museums and libraries most often are the first to have their funding cut during bad times. Neither are selling out their primary function, they've just changed the packaging.

| the person who bought the site had a history of book transactions on ebay, you have a better than laymans understanding of the plight of a "library director" as they constantly reinvent libraries on a needs base. and now you are a new member... just curious... | |

Ah I see, no I'm not that person. But I do have a vested interest in both museums and libraries in respect to directorship.
