| I received this a few weeks ago, via email. It's amazing, all the tire treads you notice on the highway, after viewing this story. Very scary! | |

| From what I've seen I think defects in manufacture cause more tread caps to fly off supposedly new tires than age does. I've seen cracked old tires that are 30 years old or more on farm vehicles that still take lots of abuse driving on rough gravel roads and rocky pastures. Just think how old some truck and tractor tires are that's still in use.
Not that I think it's good to do that, but I'm really not going to get excited if my tires are less than ten years old and look good. Just my opinion, but I think faulty manufacture and recapped tires have way more to do with sudden tire failures than it being 7 or 8 years old.
This is a good story to hear though and I agree that if the stores sell them as new they shouldn't be 8 years old when you buy it. I'd suggest a consumer friendly date code so you know what you're getting.

| great just what I needed to know now that I am having trouble with my tires and getting new ones. Now I dont even want to buy new ones, I'm glad they show you how to look for the dates though. I wonder if you walked into a store that sold tires and ask fr the newest dates if they would sell them to you? | |

| I have tires from the 70's that are still holding up, but they never go over 50 mph. Highway speed is hard on a tire and is probably causing these tires to fall apart. | |

| I am going to have to look at my tires. I didn't watch all of the video because of my low speed internet. The hubby tells me that I will need new tires this winter. When I bought the vehicle four years ago, they were brand new tires, supposedly... | |

| As a former tire tech, improper inflation and rotation are the major cause of failure, not age. The caps you see on the highway are from re-treads from semi's, which have 18 tires. | |

| It causes a slight increase in air pressure. Not much. Just driving creates friction which increases air pressure. Tire makers take this into account. If you check your tires recomended p.s.i., it is stated when the tire is cold to allow for this expansion. | |

| I agree that rotation makes a difference. Tires never rotated will eventually pull so much to one side they tear at the belts. And yeah, a large part of the tire debri on the highways is from semis and it rarely causes trouble unless it's a front truck tire. The majority of semi wrecks are from other causes.
I drove on cracked tires lots of times with no problems. The inner part of the tires looked good when changed. They were just weathered on the outer layer. But no, I wouldn't recommend a cross country trip with the family on weathered tires because one that's weather checked is usually a pretty old tire. I'm really not worried about a tire in the store that looks good even if it's a few years old. I used to buy used tires all the time and put several more years on them with no catastrophic failures.
