For what it's worth, my fam is as Volga as they come, and I have outgrown red beer. Probably mostly because we rarely have beer around that would need tomatoes. What qualities in a particular beer would cause it to "need" tomatoes?

| I remember 3 in Hays in the 70's. R&H Sales was first by EZ Rentals. It was kind of a weird little novelty/second hand/head shop. One on E. 8th Street for awhile, and The Inner Ear sold paraphernalia in the back of The Brass Ear in the mall. Then I think R&H moved or someone did, into that corner station on 27th and Vine for awhile. | |

| I love visiting Hays- I wandered around town a bit a few weeks ago while the Supreme Commandress was off doing her thing. Looks exactly the same as when left it 4 years ago... and I expect that it'll still look exactly the same in 20 years.
Ya'll really do have a unique, self-contained little universe there. The world has moved on... except for Hays. There's a sense of permanence about the place that you just don't find very often.

| Few places are going to completely change in 5 to 10 years. If you go back to the 60's or even 70's and compare though there's big changes. I remember when the biggest thing to hit Hays was the Tempo store. There was no mall, no Alco, no K-Mart, or Walmart. There was still Penney's, Woolworths, and Duckwalls on Main. Everything North of 27th on the East side of Vine was fields. Almost nothing was East of Roosevelt school.
The Sternberg Museum was still at the College. The Varsity and the Drive Inn Theater were Summer hot spots. There was no curfew in the Frontier Parks, cops weren't trying to see how many DUI's and MIP's they could score, and kids would drag main instead of hiding out in the country or someone's basement. There was still a sale barn where there's now town. There were 5 public swimming pools, and a big water tower was at 17th and Allen.
Not to mention the social changes and racial integration. In the 60's this was a very white, very conservative town. It's becoming more PC liberal all the time. I'm sure we could write page after page about the changes here. So were you expecting 50 story buildings and cloverleafs in just 4 years or what?

Hays is THE whitest and most conservative town of its size that I've ever seen. But I guess that's kinda relative. But yeah, there do seem to be more Mexicans around every time I visit. That much is definitely changing.

| More blacks, Asians, and Hispanics. Pretty common nowdays to be in Walmart and hear languages I don't understand. We do look less like Mexico than other places this size, but it is a big change from even 20 years ago.
And the locals don't act the same about it as years ago either. Most of the true local Chermins once shunned most outsiders, esp. those of color. Sports has had a huge impact on society in that regard. I find it funny that men who once would have hated nothing more than having a black man living next door idolize black sports heros like they're some kind of friggin gods.

| Yeah, I forgot about the Chinese at FHSU. They don't seem to mix with the locals much from what I saw... pretty much kept to themselves. Lots of them at WSU, too... along with Indians, assorted Middle Easterners, and the occasional African (who are distinctly different from American blacks). Even a few burkas out here.
Sounds like you're not too happy with said changes... and maybe I'd feel the same way if I was FROM there. But as it is, Hays mostly just a curiosity to me... along with some good memories.

| I don't mind other races being here. I can be a pretty accepting sort, contrary to what my sometimes grumpy demeanor may suggest. But I don't care one bit for sports hero worship. I think it's stupid. Does anyone spend fortunes on crap with your picture or name on it? Do they sit in front of the TV to watch you fix a truck engine? Does anyone put up a flag in their yard with their favorite artist or doctors name on it?
Cheering your kid on at a school sports event I understand. Bragging about their accomplishments I understand. I just don't understand sports star worship. Especially when it turns life long racists into groveling idiots hoping for an autographed jersey. It just seems tacky and two faced.
It's kind of like one guy I know. He always tells ni**er jokes. He talks down on blacks all the time yet talks of the ones on his favorite ball team like a proud father would of his sons. The two sided attitude just rubs me wrong.
To make a long story short, I don't mind other races being in Hays. I just can't be so narrow minded as to accept a total loser of any color just because they can play ball. That trend in society bothers me alot.

| Again, can't argue with you on that one. I've never understood the grown mens' fascination with grown men chasing a ball. If a 'sport' doesn't involve an engine, boobs, a fishing rod, or a gun... then I'm just not interested. | |

| I like guns and fishing, though I havn't done alot lately. Boobs are fun but havn't had an abundance of those as of late either.
I don't mind watching a drag race, and a fine classic car still gets my attention. And there's a certain comfortable feel associated with the low rumble of driving my 454 pickup even if it is an old beater. Circle track racing never has interested me much though. Too long and boring.
Now I could understand admiring the ancient gladiators. They fought for all or nothing. If they got hurt they either fought on or died. There was none of this moaning on the field waiting for the sports doc to pamper you and pump you full of pain meds in the locker room. And nobody would have ever cheered an injured gladiator for limping off the field. Unless of course his opponent was laying dead behind him.

Much the same here. I still go fishing on occasion, but I've just never found what I consider to be good fishing here in Kansas. I reckon I was spoiled by the relative abundance of rivers, creeks, and TVA lakes back in Tennesse. It's one of the few things that I miss about the place. I still go hunting on occasion up at the inlaws' place, but haven't been in a few years... busy with school and such. But I'm going to make it a point to go shoot something this year. As for racing, I'm really more interested in the mechanics of it than actually watching. And boobs... I threw them into the 'sport' discussion simply because they make certain sports and olympic events worth watching on occasion. I can see your point about gladiators. I wouldn't say I'm a big fan of MMA, but I'll watch one now and then. It's kinda gay really, but fun to watch now and then. I mean, I wasn't convinced that Fedor was even human 'til just the other day... and I still don't think he has a soul. And Cro-Cop... anybody who regularly kicks people in the face is ok in my book. I mean yeah, he's a cop- but I think being Croatian helps negate some of that.

| I watch the UFC shows once in awhile. I think it's funny that pro wrestlers have gone to the UFC because they wanted to deliver real beatings. I can sure see why Brock Lesner went UFC. It has to be humilating on WWE for some 300 pound block of muscle when the script says that runt Ray Mysterio gets to win.
I'll watch a few womens sports just to watch the women too. I've considered trying to toss some bait in the water and see if there's any cats biting but never have gotten round to it. I knew a guy from Missouri that always had fish tales to tell. There's a guy I know here that seems to have a knack for catching impressive fish in local places where most can't. Not sure what his secret is. He's shown me big cats and 15 inch crappie caught right near here.

Well, I don't understand why someone would think that another eating establishment would go over in Hays. Perhaps it would, but doesn't the market for a town the size of Hays seem saturated?

Timberline is owned by the same people as Freddie's (they even share a building in Salina). I don't get how they would like that location, though.
