Legislation banning smoking in many public places in Kansas was awaiting the governor's signature.

The ban would take effect July 1. Gov. Mark Parkinson was scheduled to sign the measure Friday at the Statehouse.

Besides bars and restaurants, the legislation bans smoking in libraries, theaters, retail stores and most work places.

Supporters contend the restrictions will protect public health and reduce deaths from cancer and other diseases.

Critics argue the limits will hurt businesses. They also note the bill exempts the gambling floors of state-owned casinos as well as tobacco shops, private clubs and designated areas of nursing homes.

This thread isn't quite what your video suggests nitro. It's just to the point that if all slider can do is insult and be a nuisance why should anyone give him any other kind of reply?

But yeah, slider may think this is some big cause for celebration since he can't debate his way past a kindergarten class and needs the government to stomp on everyone for him.

But his day will come when government tells him he's going to lose something and I sure hope someone laughs long and loud and rubs his nose in it. But then I hope they speak up for him and show him that's what Americans are supposed to do when government oversteps it's boundries.

Actually, Ratz, the only reason for slider's gloating is due to bighead giving him recognition for completing a thought during an argument. This gave him a sense of positive validation above that which he receives for not having found his name Google'd daily by concerned parents to find out if he is in the sex offenders registry.

Yeah, I thought of that as soon as Bighead gave him a pat on the back as if he had a brain. While we are on the smoking issue, where does our pretending governor get his BS stats that 70% of Kansans wanted this ban? At work I've asked, and even most of the non-smokers think it should be the business owners decision. I'd be willing to buy both the tar and feathers for our current lying sack of shit in the govs office. I'd welcome Queen Kathleen back as opposed to this brain dead bastard.

The governor of the state is supposed to try to do things that will include fair compromise for all law abiding citizens and not just cater to the bedwetters who cry the most.

He's not running for re-election. Come January, the governor will most likely be Sam Brownback.

I considered politics myself once, but I'd pull the government tit away from too many voters and tell the whiners that policy that tries to be fair to all and the Constitution would rule my decisions. The republicans are suggesting we all share the burden and cut budgets to fix the problem, while the governor and democrats want to target specific product users and tax the hell out of them. Gee, which sounds more logical?

Seems to be the fairest to me.
Someone may mention that it hits the poor the hardest, but so do alcohol and tobacco taxes.

Actually, sales tax is the most regressive tax. Alcohol and tobacco taxes may hit the poor harder than other classes as a percentage of their income, but they are essentially voluntary. The idea to cut budgets seems to be a good one, unless it hits your particular sector. They could have started a long time ago by eliminating the excessive cost of renovating the capitol building, but the economy was booming at the time our legislators have no foresight. There are so many duplicate services in the state government that it should be fairly simple for them to sit down and figure out where they can cut the budget. They won't do it, though, because they don't want to piss any potential voters off. As for the school administrators crying about budget cuts, too bad. Their solution for declining performance is always to throw more money at it. They've been doing that for as long as I can remember, and schools keep getting worse and worse. If you think I'm exaggerating, look up the history on Highland Park High School in Topeka. They avoided being closed by the school district last week, but it seems inevitable that it will be. Then the gangs will have to find a new territory.

I don't kow how to solve budget problems but I think Kaufman could take a decrease in pay. I watched the school board meeting from March 8th on TV and it was the best TV I've seen in a long time. Kudos to Greg Schwartz and Darren Schumacher for standing up for what they believe and know is right.

On the problem of taxes, if the one percent increase goes into effect we will be paying almost ten cents on a dollar for taxes. That seems rather high to me.

If you knew all of the hidden taxes on things it's higher than that. Some who claim to know say up to 50% of our paychecks go to taxes of some form.
