| "The bottom seven of this year's rankings, first to last, are Bank of America, Chase, Capital One, TD/Commerce, Fifth Third, Citibank, and in last place, HSBC.""Credit unions ranked much higher than the big banks, as they have in previous years, with 70 percent of credit union customers saying their financial institution puts their interests first."Full Story Here | |

| The Truth About Credit Card Debt
Myth: Aren't there positive uses of a credit card? Like rebates and airline miles? Truth: Responsible use of a credit card does not exist. Credit card debt is a major problem in America.
There is no positive side to credit card use. You will spend more if you use credit cards. Even by paying the bills on time, you are not beating the system! But most families don't pay on time. The average family today carries $8,000 in credit card debt according to the American Bankers' Association.
Now let's talk about the rebates. If you were using a credit card at 5%, you would have had to have spent $80,000 to get $4,000 rebates on new cars that lost $6,000 of value when you drove them off the lot. That is not a good deal!
Cash vs. Credit Cards When you pay cash, you can "feel" the money leaving you. This is not true with credit cards. Flipping a credit card up on a counter registers nothing emotionally. A study of credit card use at McDonald’s found that people spent 47% more when using credit instead of cash. This is money you could have saved!
If you "have to" use plastic, I suggest a debit card. I use them for travel and the occasional convenience of ordering something over the Internet or phone. Other than that, I use cash.
Personal finance is 80% behavior. You need to cut out habits that make you spend more. You do not build wealth with credit cards. Use common sense. When you play with a multi-billion dollar industry and you think you're going to win at their game, you are naive. You cannot beat the credit card companies.Source

| seems he's not the only scumbag connected to the bank... Thomas Denny Sanford (born 23 December 1935 in Saint Paul)[1] is a South Dakota businessman and philanthropist. He is currently the chairman and CEO of United National Corp. Sanford made his fortune as the owner of First Premier Bank, and Premier Bankcard, both among the nation's leading credit card providers.[2] Sanford's net worth is roughly $1.0 billion, and he is ranked as #701 in Forbes list of richest people in the world.[2] This wealth was obtained by usurious interest rates on credit cards distributed "pre-approved" by mail to those with poor or no credit. Until prevented by federal law, the credit cards from banks controlled by Mr. Sanford charged $256 in fees per year for a card with a $250 credit limit. In response to the law banning such fees, the bank now issues cards carrying an interest rate of 79.9% (the nations highest) on a card with a $300 limit. [3] Mr. Sanford and his business entities have a history of violations of Federal rules of banking practice. cf. http://www.federalreserve.gov/Boarddocs/Press/enforcement/2003/20030925/default.htmhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T._Denny_SanfordSANFORD, T D MR SCOTTSDALE, AZ 85255 FIRST PREMIER BANK/CHAIRMAN OF THE $2,300 09/04/2008 G ELIZABETH DOLE COMMITTEE INC - Republican SANFORD, T D SCOTTSDALE, AZ 85255 FIRST PREMIER BANK/CHAIRMAN OF THE $2,300 08/01/2008 P STEVENS FOR SENATE COMMITTEE - Republican SANFORD, T D SCOTTSDALE, AZ 85255 FIRST PREMIER BANK/CHAIRMAN OF THE $2,300 08/01/2008 G STEVENS FOR SENATE COMMITTEE - Republican SANFORD, T D SCOTTSDALE, AZ 85255 FIRST PREMIER BANK/CHAIRMAN $-2,300 07/23/2008 P BOB SCHAFFER FOR US SENATE - Republican SANFORD, T D SCOTTSDALE, AZ 85255 FIRST PREMIER BANK/CHAIRMAN $2,300 07/23/2008 G BOB SCHAFFER FOR US SENATE - Republican SANFORD, T D SIOUX FALLS, SD 57105 FIRST PREMIER BANK/CHAIRMAN $2,300 07/22/2008 G TIM JOHNSON FOR SOUTH DAKOTA INC - Democrat SANFORD, T D SCOTTSDALE, AZ 85255 FIRST PREMIER BANK/CHAIRMAN $4,600 07/21/2008 P BOB SCHAFFER FOR US SENATE - Republican SANFORD, T DENNY SIOUX FALLS, SD 57101 FIRST PREMIER BANK/CHAIRMAN $2,000 06/09/2008 G FRIENDS OF JOHN THUNE - Republican SANFORD, T DENNY SIOUX FALLS, SD 57101 $-900 06/09/2008 G FRIENDS OF JOHN THUNE - Republican SANFORD, T. Credit cards suck! We won't be arguing this one. For the first time in all my years I'm thinking of getting one through my bank, but only because there's a few things on the net I can't get without one. I'd like to string up all the bastards that decided we needed to be a credit card world. Just one step away from the national identity card. | |

| According to my banker, if someone gets your debit card you are liable for any expenses, but a credit card, at least through them, will not hold you responsible. | |

| I gotta agree with Stony and EP here. You're better off without credit cards. I've managed to get through 33 years of life without them (except for a brief experiment with a Sears Card)... and I expect to get by for several more years without credit cards.
Problem is that credit card companies can essentially make up the rules as they go along. You might 'win' now and then- but you're essentially playing against the house. In the long-run, odds are that you're gonna lose.
I save up cash and buy major purchases outright (no car payments, no couch payments). I DO use a debit card just for convenience, but keep the account balance relatively low just in case. I think a credit card might be more convenient in SOME ways (renting a car, theft protection), but all that comes at a price.

| My bank is going to start limiting their credit card to the amount in your account to help prevent debts from overuse and fraud. But my banker still says I'm not liable for losses on their credit card but would be on the debit card. I've always paid cash before. Never even had a checking account.
But some places I'd like to order from have quit mail order business. I suppose I could e-mail the companies and ask for an address to send a money order, but they may not all want to. I've seen some things on ebay I really wanted to bid on but everyone nowdays does friggin paypal.

| Pay Pal has the option of paying from your bank account. I have done this several times. You have to specify where you want the funds to come from when you set up the account. | |

| Thanks for that info Blackie. I had the understanding paypal required either a credit or debit card. But I still have some things on line I might need a card for. I'll have a talk with my banker again. He said he uses paypal with a bank issued credit card. | |
