I haven't seen our friendly neighborhood possum yet this year. Maybe he moved to your neighborhood...

It's just looking for a cat or dog dish to raid. I had them constantly on the porch at my other house. It won't bother you, but if you see one acting sick or aggressive, or running around in broad daylight let the authorities know.

Ours was more scared of us than we were of him. He was excellent at "playing possum." I thought he was dead in the gutter more than once.

Have you ever had a possum hiss at you? They can be scary little (or big) creatures.

No. Ours have always been non-confrontational, thank goodness.

They never are. We've had some ugly battle scarred old timers show up. I just ignore them.

Once in awhile an onery, or frightened one will hiss, but they don't like to fight.

About a year ago I turned onto 15th and General Custer and the oposum was in my lane and the bastared wouldn't move. I should have just hit him and solved the problem. A few nights after that the little bastard was in my front yard and he did hiss at me. I should have shot him that night.

We used to have a possum that would come up and eat right along with the outside cats. We lived on a farm, and the cats didn't seem to mind a whole lot so we just let it be. My dad even jokingly named it "cat."

That's how I got to know possums so well. They came up all the time looking for things in the cats dish. The cats only got upset once when one got too close to new kittens. That poor possum was getting hit by at least 4 cats as it tried to escape. They surrounded it and took turns attacking. That was the only time I ever saw the cats bothered by one.

What I didn't like seeing investigating my porch for cat leftovers was the skunks. My mom learned the hard way not to bend over to pet a black and white cat in the dark. The sad part was she only learned to watch out for skunks after the "second" time she got sprayed. I figured I better put up flood lights after that.

We had some baby possums in our yard a few years back. Humane society took them away.

I hear they're edible, but are greasy and gamey tasting.
