| I think this would be an indication that there won't be a Target coming to the area anytime soon. Hope walmart suits everyone http://money.cnn.com/2009/01/27/news/economy/tuesday_jobs/index.htm?cnn=yesFurthermore, a spokeswoman for Target (TGT, Fortune 500), the second largest U.S. discounter after Wal Mart, said it is taking actions to reduce costs including job cuts. She could not yet provide details on how many employees will be affected. | |

| Probably won't be long before WalMart* starts cutting jobs in the larger markets. | |

| That doesn't mean it's over. Let's look at this. - Quote :
- Target (TGT, Fortune 500), the second-largest U.S. discounter after Wal-Mart (WMT, Fortune 500), announced 1,500 job cuts. The Work force reduction affects 9% of employees at its headquarters, including the elimination of about 600 employees and 400 open positions, primarily in the Twin Cities area. The majority of those changes are effective today.
Target also announced it will close its Little Rock, Ark., distribution center, which currently employs 500 people, later this year. Why so much in just two places? First off Arkansas is Walmart home turf. I wouldn't be surprised to see Walmart buy Target's Arkansas facilities. And I'd wager there's also a reason most of the rest are in the Twin Cities area. What other large chains might be dominant there? Target could very well boot a bunch of employees in one area because the competition is too great and build new in another with less competitors. Don't forget that there were rumors that Walmart might bomb out in Hays and then we suddenly got the new and improved one.

| Hey, Ratz Have you been shopping lately at China Town a.k.a Walmart? There isn't an article of clothing that is in the store that is made in the U.S.A. It all comes from China, Japan, Korea, Afganastan, Bangladesh, Vietnam. Cheap labor for over priced junk. And who do you think is reaping the rewards? Cooperate of course! And the only thing new there is the grocery side of the store, and I would say 80-90% of the items stocked on the shelves are from other countries as well. New and Improved? For who? | |

| It's not just wal mart. Clothes in almost all stores with a few exceptions are made overseas. | |

| crutch, you don't have to tell me about all that. I've been aware of the Walmart path to China ever since Sam Walton died. When I said new and improved, I meant they built a new and expanded store. Before that the Hays Walmart was barely above Alco and K Mart. | |

| An Asian man walked into the currency exchange in New York City with 2000 yen and walked out with $72. The following week, he walked in with 2000 yen, and was handed $66. He asked the teller why he got less money that week than the previous week.
The teller said, "Fluctuations."
The Asian man stormed out, and just before slamming the door, turned around and shouted, "Fluc you Amelicans, too!"

Target should be the dominant "big box" store in Minnesota. That's where their headquarters is. That's why the T'wolves and the Wild play at the Target Center. The reason they are probably cutting a lot of jobs in the Twin Cities is that most of their white collar jobs are there. Thoses are the people who make more money and have more benefits, so they can cut those jobs and save more. That being said, don't hold your breath waiting for a Target to come to Hays. And as for the Evil Empire only selling clothes from China and other Third World countries, Target does the same thing. So does JC Penney. So does Macy's. So does Nordstrom. So do all of the brand name stores in the malls. (Except The Mall in Hays - there are no stores there.)

| The economy will soon catch up to the evil empire (walmart). Its going to get to a point where people will just spend money on groceries and health needs and not buy those impulse items. | |

Of the bigger stores there are about 45 Targets around the Twin Cities. But there's also 30 Walmarts and lots of other competitors. If you think about it out of 45 Targets if only 10 or 15 employees were dismissed in each store there'd still be lots working. I doubt they are in that bad of a fix, and you may be quite right that trimming the fat off the top levels could be why they concentrated layoffs there. Bosses just love knocking off big money employees to replace them with low wage earners. I also agree it's not worth holding your breath waiting for a Target in Hays.

- Construction machinery manufacturer Caterpillar (CAT, Fortune 500) said Monday it will cut 20,000 jobs amid a "very challenging global business environment." The company had already planned to cut 15,000 workers since the fourth quarter of 2008, but added another 5,000, bringing the total to 20,000.
Pfizer (PFE, Fortune 500) said in an earnings report it would cut 10% of its staff of 81,900 and close five of its manufacturing plants. And a second round of cuts will shed about 15% of employees from the combined Pfizer/Wyeth staff of 120,000. That makes a total of 26,000 jobs lost. The company already cut 4,700 jobs in 2008. Possible translation.... Screw America, we can build plants in other nations with weak health and safety regulations and pay our employees there peanuts. And we'd really like to thank our wonderful politicians for making it so easy to hose the American worker and enhance our profits. .

| I saw a commercial the other day that was leasing vehicles (not sure who it was), but they actually said, they would lease the cars out and if you lost your income, you could return it with no penalties. | |
