| I like to keep watch on the days length. We've already been having later sunsets since about the 12th of December. The sunrise has stopped getting later and will start getting earlier Jan 11th. Just in case anyone is curious as to sunrise sunset and when days really start getting longer. I calculated it for Hays, but you can calculate for any town Calculate for your location here. http://aa.usno.navy.mil/data/docs/RS_OneYear.php | |

| come december 21st 2012, we may not have to be concerned about sunsets or sunrises according to the mayan calendar. We will either be extinct or a major catastrophe will take place. It's either going to be a wake up call and a time to make changes or there's going to be a major catastrophe that may end life as we know it... | |

Or maybe that's just the day when the Mayans decided they'd make a new calendar. That day according to the Mayans is the end of an earth cycle, not the end of everything. But I wouldn't be surprised if some primitive brained apocalyptic boobs decided that they have to nuke the world for god on that day.

The Mayans also believed the time to wage war, bad luck, and other things, were associated with certain points of the moon, venus, etc., in the cycle. And many of the prophesies of Nostradamus and others keep getting "re-interpreted" each time the earth doesn't end as the modern readers think they schedualed it to. Shake them rattles, toss them chicken bones. Run in your cave and prepare to die, for Jupiter is in alignment with the wart on the butt of the great god Whackaschlong...

| The end of the earth cycle does not indicate the end of the world. In the cycle that is about to end, they predicted their own demise. To the day. Read somewhere that the change in calendars is often accompanied with major earth events. Volcanoes, meteors, etc.
Of course we can't rule out the possibility of the librul media getting nukes and waging war on a conservative French government.

The tsunami of 2004 killed almost a quarter of a million people, a higher figure by other's count. Still, the movement of the continental plates which caused the tsunami was a planetary event. I read somewhere that it actually affected the orbit of the Earth. Wish I could find that.

| Ok folks, Scientists have been able to tell us when comets would return and much more for a very long time. So just what could happen in a few years that was foreseeable to ancient Mayans that our modern science can't see? Sure, changes in orbit could affect many things. But we're not likely to be hurled into a catastrophic change just literally overnight.

| Asteroids have been flying round the universe forever and they say one could hit some day. But nobody has said one will hit in 2012 on Dec 21st.
And as far as the Mayans predicting the end goes, I think they were a little off. The Spanish finished them off in the late 1600's. And the cyclic thing that they spoke of was about everything. The cycles of the universe, the cycles of crops, etc. They practiced sacrifice, often of children. And it was the priests job to decide if all the cycles were right to knock off a kid or two.
They thought the Sun was a god, but that Venus was more important. They also thought there was a corn god. I just can't bring myself to worry about the predictions of someone who thought there was a corn god.

| Ok, I've had my fun here. But does anyone know of anyone credible in the scientific community that says they are certain a major catastrophy will happen between now and 2012? I know there's lots of speculation on what could happen.
The end of the world theme seems quite popular lately and every channel on TV from Discovery, to National Geographic, to History, to the Weather Channel are putting out gloom and doom shows, but is there anyone willing to put their butt on the line and say "This will happen for sure"?

| Rush to prepare The race is on for better forecasting abilities, as the next peak in solar activity is expected to come around 2012.
While the sun is in a lull now, activity can flare up at any moment, and severe space weather — how severe, nobody knows — will ramp up a year or two before the peak. link to story

| I watched the Nostradamus show last night. Some of his predictions could be interpreted to mean anything from a disaster destroying a major city to the queen of England soiling herself.
As to his possible prediction, as well as others and the Mayan calendar pointing to the year 2012, it shows intelligence to be able to follow the movements of our galaxy and calculate the planets future positions.
However, I saw none of them explain why they thought the solar alignment with the center of the galaxy would be anything to worry about. Sounds like men who were just advanced enough to be skilled astronomers but still superstitious enough to get spooked by it.
