| Couple blocks off Main, downtown area. The house was built 91 years ago. Originally, just four rooms and a cellar, later there was a kitchen, bathroom and the regular stairs added. I know there had to be an outhouse somewhere in the back yard! | |

| Built in 1917 the year my dad was born. Also the year the nations biggest mail order whiskey company "Hayner" closed it's doors because of prohibition. In that area of town it may not have been the first house on the lot either. The town had already existed for 50 years and few original homes from the 1800's remain. | |

Ellis Co. Historical Society has some, but to get copies costs plenty.

After 80 or more years it's just dirt. That's all any dirt is, just shit and dead stuff. If you didn't know what a 100 year old privy was you'd just think it was an old trash pit. It's degraded a whole lot further than the manure we fertilize our gardens with.

When we had some of the windows replaced in this house, there was a board the installation man removed which had the builder's name and the date that he was framing the windows when the house was first built . . . 1923. I have a picture of it. Give me some time to find it. An old buddy of mine who works in construction and cabinet making said that a lot of those guys put memoirs such as beer cans and alcohol bottles in the walls for posterity. That same friend found a Schlitz can nailed to a stud in a place he lived. It was back in the 1940's . . . . had to use a church-key to open it. Pretty damn cool.

| Writing dates on inside walls was common. Putting beer and whiskey bottles in walls was too, but that was usually just because it was a handy place to dispose of them. There's two old Swan Whiskey bottles in between my houses original wall and the first add on, but they broke from settling putting pressure on them. Shame too because they're pre-prohibition.
They did sometimes write notes and use old bottles as a time capsule, but so far all I've found in walls or under houses were just throw aways. LukeThr said there's a board on the South side of my house under the siding dated in the 1880's but thought it was a re-used board. The original structure is pretty old with square nails in the staircase, but don't know how old. Maybe the board on the addition was taken from the original outer wall when they added on. I know the county lists the place as built in the early teens, but I think that's more likely the date of the first addition.

| That is cool! We are hoping to expand our upstairs bathroom and that would include tearing down a wall. That would be neat to find something hidden in the wall. I remember 20 some years ago, they tore down a couple of houses in Plainville to put up a convenience store and they found a bunch of old newspapers that were really old and they were used for insulation.
Back on topic...I plan to be better on not letting the actions of my son-in-law get under my skin!

| I'd like to have seen those papers SG. My dads family moved to just outside Plainville in the 1880's and were well known. My great grandad was a Rooks Co. commissioner. I know where they homesteaded up there and even have a photo circa 1900 showing the outhouse. But some Arabic sounding attorney owns it now and they say he's hard to deal with. | |

| I just asked the hubby and he said the newspapers were in the 1920's. For some reason, 1923 rings a bell in my head. The houses were pretty much falling apart. | |

| Plainville would have some good digging, but the last of my contacts there either left, or died a few years ago. I had great grandparents, grandparents, numerous great aunts and uncles, their kids, and my dad and his sister still in the Plainville area in the 20's. Very well could have been things in the papers about some of them. I think the great great grandparents there died in the 20's
I know it was 20's or 30's when two of my relatives died of gunshots up there. One shot himself crossing a fence, and one great uncles death in the 30's was called a suicide, but my dad swears his wife shot him. Dad said she was pure evil.

| We still have the hubby's step mom there, an aunt and one of his sisters. I have quite a few friends over there also.
I remember it being on the front page of the Plainville Times. I don't know if they had the papers or if someone else had them. I liked reading their newspaper. It always had highlights from that day 25, 50 and I think 75 years ago of the town's news.

| They used to put papers under linoleum too. I've heard of some found in Ellis that dated to the teens under a linoleum floor. Yeah, linoleum goes way back. It was invented in 1860. | |
