| Sean Avery of the NHL's Dallas Stars has been suspended indefinitely by the league for comments made to reporters about his former girlfriends following the team's morning skate in Calgary on Tuesday. The Stars played the Flames on Tuesday night.. "I'm really happy to be back in Calgary. I love Canada. I just want to comment on how it's become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds. I don't know what that's about, but enjoy the game tonight." - Yahoo News wrote:
- Avery's ex-girlfriend, actress Elisha Cuthbert of the television show "24" and the movie "Old School," is dating Calgary defenseman Dion Phaneuf; she also had been romantically linked to Mike Komisarek of the Montreal Canadiens.
"My thoughts were that it was a very disrespectful comment, and the league took action and I definitely agree with the way they took action," Phaneuf said after the Flames' 3-1 loss to the Stars on Tuesday night.
Avery also dated Rachel Hunter, the former Sports Illustrated swimsuit cover model and actress who is now the girlfriend of Los Angeles Kings center Jarrett Stoll. So is the league justified in suspending him for that comment or should the burden of discipline have been left to the team? And remember, we can't argue this constitutionally as a free speech issue because the incident took place in Canada and the NHL is based in Toronto. Any thoughts? | |
