Has anyone been watching the "Stormchasers " series on the Discovery Channel? I had a chance to visit with them in Hays this past May , which ended up being the day of the Ellis tornadoes. I think the episode tonite at 9 might be dealing with the storms around here. When we talked to them they had the original TIV back out after all the breakdowns on the new one.

I used to go to the storm spotters meeting over in Russell ever year, then I moved to Hays and never been able to catch one there. Do they not have them at all in Hays?? If not where is the closest one, Russell? I like to watch that . Does it look like Ellis show tonight??

no , I checked the date of the Arkansas storms they were after and it was May 10. The storms around here were on May 22-23. The spotter meetings are sometime in the spring. You might be able to find out when thru the county emergency operations managers office

jewelz.. I'll try to remember to let you know when spotter classes are. They typically start in Kansas in late Feb and run through March. They also announce upcoming spotter meetings for our area on Channel 10 news during the weather report.

The one that started near Cedar Bluff was up to 1/2 mile wide on the ground and came within 3 or 4 miles of Ellis.

Why can't I get pictures this good?

Of 235 confirmed tornados in the US between May 22nd and 31st 2008 there were 114 in Kansas.

That was definitely a week for storm chasers. I just hope that this spring won't be a repeat of that.

I expect the trend for violent weather to continue next spring. I expected an above average tornado year this last spring for this part of KS and told a couple guys at work back in Feburary to prepare for an unusually rough spring. I got that one right, so I'll make my official prediction AKA "guess" about Feburary or early March. Right now I expect about an average winter with some average snows and a couple weeks of serious cold with another ballbuster spring storm season.

If you want to know what I base my thoughts on, I don't know. Just feel like it'll be that way. But right now, I think Ellis County and the surrounding area will have more tornadic storms than usual next spring. I think we are at the peak of a cycle. In two or three years a serious lack of rain and very hot (110 degree+) summers may be the story again.

I expect nearly 2 dozen snow events this year. A minor snow flurry counts the same as a blizzard when counting. We have already had one.
I expect the third full week of January to be a rough one. Have your shovel handy.
Snowfall totals will be at or above normal for the season.
I expect another above average year of cyclonic activity, however our activity will be less than areas to our north. The peak activity area last season was in a Plainville > Goodland > Garden City triangle. It is Nebraska's turn to get the headlines.

I expect another heavy tornado year for us here justoo. Actually they were widespread across western and central KS last spring and summer and I expect a repeat. It seems we have a series of bad storm years followed by a series of dry ones. And contrary to popular belief, I usually expect the wetter spring and summer seasons to lead into drier winters, and winters with the heaviest snow can lead into the driest hottest summers. I expect a moderate winter this year, but possibly a cold one, leading into a wet hostile spring with intensely erratic atmospheric energy.

Or not....LOL
