USD 489 Text Alerts

Got one of these a few minutes ago. Apparently a student at HHS made a threat via instant messenger. The text said it was investigated and no threat remains or exists. Nice to know they are keeping parents informed.

Apparently some kids don't know when they've crossed the line. I got the same text and this e-mail.

On Thursday evening, October 30, 2008, a student made an inappropriate gun threat over internet chat, as a joke. The student will not be in school on Friday, October 31, and will be disciplined according to district policy. Officers and administration have investigated the matter and concluded that no threat exists to the student body or staff.

so this is going state wide then?

And to think, we used to drive to High School with Shotguns and Rifles hanging in the back window of the Pickup ..... go figure!

You have to sign up. I have a kid at Hays High, one at Topeka High, one at Felten and one at FHSU.

Its funny how times have changed since we have been in school. When I was in school I was ever worried about was to get everyone to like me. Now kids have to worry about going to school and getting thru the day safe. The last time I was in my old high school there were cameras up in the school. I would have never dreamed of anything like that when I was in school. It gives me 2nd thoughts on even having kids especially putting them through this life we have to live today.

This is what happens when lawyers outnumber people.

Yeah lawyers and the lack of responsibility kids have today. What is the world going to be like in 20 years. Sure not all kids are irresponsible but its those ones who aren't responsible that we have to worry about.

Ok thanks for providing even more info about this. Where did you sign up for the email? Im assuming this kid was using his school laptop and it got flagged by the people that monitor the server? If so thats a good deal.

I don't remember. It was either the same place as the text alerts or the same time I signed up for the daily Power School e-mails.

15 years ago the only way we would ever find out something like this is if a school sent a letter out to the parents and it wouldn't get to the parents a day or so after the incident happened.

The lack of responsibility is those who tell children that kids should not have to endure ANY punishment due to their behavior, including grounding.

I know I've preached this before, but if you didn't have 24-7 media, this would not be a problem.

Yeah its crazy now that parents face child abuse when they try to discipline their children. I know this is due to all the lawyers we have now. I know that is scares my grandparents generation knowing that today's future kids are not living up to what standards were 70 or even 80 years ago. I just wonder what life will be like when I turn 70 yrs old.

That was pre-text messaging and pre-Columbine.

Hays is very fortunate to have this system and an administrative staff that cares enough to send these messages out, even at 10:30 pm.

When things happen at THS, and believe me, there's a hell of a lot of violence there, parents don't find out at all unless their kid tells them or they see it in the newpaper or on TV news.
