Used to be Thanksgiving, because we all (10 kids+spouses and all the kids and kids kids) went "home" to mom's for dinner and family fights... err, I mean Fun! T-giving is still up there, but it shares space with Christmas.

Christmas, Halloween, and July 4th are all good. Christmas and the 4th were probably more special when I was a kid because so much family I spent them with are dead now. But Halloween has never lost it's magic. There's just something about jackolanterns, ghosts, witches, and all the other Halloween stuff that never gets old.
But I still really get into the Christmas lights too. But the snow and ice mean road danger, illness, and frostbite to me now instead of fun. I like the 4th too, but now it seems more tiring in the July heat than it did when I was a kid. So yeah, I'd say Halloween is my big one with the other two still being close.

I love July 4th, we spend way too much on fireworks and have lots of people over and a huge cook out. I really like Halloween too, Thanksgiving is special too. Christmas is good, but so many holidays I just feel are brought on by Hallmark and commercialism. I all most hate cards, isn't that a sad thing??? After 27 years of marriage, it's like wow, just pick out another card in the pile and give it to each other again. Every day should be special I think. Each day is the present that we get to enjoy!!!

Christmas was originally a pagan/Roman holiday celebrating the winter solistice, and the return of the sun called Saturnalia by the Romans. Christmas as we know it was probably a two fold creation by both the church to fight paganism, and merchants who sought to boost sales during the harsh winter months.
Myself, I'm glad Christmas is so commercial. All those lights and other decor of the time may have nothing to do with Christmas, but they brighten up what I call the dying time of the year. And if we're going to get technical, Christs birthday has nothing to do with the winter solistice, so put up them phoney trees all covered with flashy glass balls and cover the town with lights. It's fitting.

Oh yeah, I love the lights and the decoration, but the *spend money because other people expect awesome presents* is what pisses me off. I remember sleeping in the camper at Big Mama and Papa's house (in their driveway-whatever-they lived in the country) and taking baths (in the bathtub that was outside!!!) with all the cousins (girls first then the boys) in the same bath water that we had to bring in from the water well and boil to make it warm enough to get in-in the middle of winter. Then if we drove a car instead of the camper, we all slept all over the house, couches, floors, where ever we dropped. If we were in the camper, Santa would leave the $5.00 doll in the closet. Those were some happy memories. Not full of what did I get and what did they get.

Yeah, the gift thing is way overboard. I remember feeling like a dick in 6th grade when we came back from Christmas break and the teacher asked us to each tell about our best gift. Not that I was unhappy with mine, I just felt rather blown out of the water by more well off kids telling about their extravagant gifts.

Thanks jess, I still have more stuff to put up. I like Thanksgiving too. Partly because of family and the dinner, but also because Thanksgiving night has always been our traditional night to turn on the Christmas lights. Kinda like how the Thanksgiving Day parade always ends with Santa.

Guess I'm just an old romantic at heart cause I love Valentines Day. Love picking out just the right card and it's even more special knowing that she has every one I've ever given her. Now with two grandkids Christmas will probably take on a more special meaning in our lives.

Guess I'm selfish, but July 4th is my birthday. When I was a kid, my dad always took that week off. We'd always go to my grandparents' house ( they lived on a different island) for the week and stay in the cabin between their house and my uncle's house. On the 4th, all the relatives (which meant most everyone on the island except the summer cattle) would be there for a huge barbeque and picnic. My grandmother, mother and aunts would make a huge amount of lobster and crab meat. My dad and uncles would cook the burgers, hot dogs and roast the corn on the cob. My grandfather would sit in his recliner with a stogie and watch the Red Sox until he fell asleep. He remembered when they won the World Series in 1918, before they sold The Babe to the hated Yankees. I sure wish they had come through for him in '67. They broke his heart. But I digress. All of us kids went to the beach in the morning, ate a hell of a lot of food in the afternoon, then we'd go on my uncle's lobster boat in the evening to watch the fireworks from the water. They shot them from a hill overlooking the bay out over the water. We'd be as close as the Coast Guard allowed us to get, along with a couple hundred other boats. We were literally underneath them. It was always a spectacular show.
This video is this year's fireworks, but they haven't changed much.
