No, no explosion, it was a fire. At this time at least 6 were injured and they had one code black.

Lots of articles on the news websites. According to them, there were 8 people transported to the hospital, no reports of any severe injuries or fatalaties. Lots of speculation. Sounds like it was contained to a small area. Could have been MUCH worse.

I have a friend that works in ER she said no one died... BUT that doesn't mean someone isnt in critical cond. I heard it was from someone smoking while on oxygen and it blew up(this came from a friend who was working the scene) but I dont know how credible that is either!

I completely agree! And was actually rather surprised when I heard that.

Not sure about the Code Black unless that person was taken straight to the morgue. I do know that she said no one died... sooo maybe that just ment no one died in ER. Who knows I'm sure we will find out sooner or later!

Oxygen doesn't explode. It adds to the combustion process. Usually when someone on oxygen has an accident it's because the oxygen reached a flame while near someone's clothing or hair. I've also heard of a heat source sometimes coming in contact with oxygen tubing having similar results setting chairs, carpets, etc., on fire quickly. It will act like a blowtorch accelerating the fire but oxygen itself is not flammable and does not explode.

As to the cause, that is for HFD and the investigators to make the call. I will not assume I know since I wasn't there, but I did personally hear a fire chief once say he always blamed unknown fires on cigarettes because no one ever questioned it. If the lady smoked and was on oxygen it's likely the cause, but I'd hope they'd rule out space heaters, electric blankets, etc., before automatically blaming the smoking demon.

As to the code blue / code black stuff on facebook, they need to keep their gossiping mouths and keyboards to their own business. This isn't the first time busy bodies have exaggerated the story and unfortunately families in the past have heard horrific details of family members graphic deaths that never happened.

There are persons assigned to provide news media with casualty information and it needs to be left to them to do so. Some assclown listening to a scanner and rushing online to post what they only assume to be facts should go back to insulting the color of their neighbor's car, masturbating on a porn site, or whatever it is they do online usually.

I think it was highly irresponsible for that facebook person to put a lot of the info they did on from that event. if people want to listen on their own, thats one thing, but there is no way listening to radio traffic is going to give you a complete picture of whats going on. things are too fragmented to be sure that the pieces being tied together are always connected to each other. Thats why cities and counties have agencies that do what they do after all the facts are known, then statements are put out for the general public. All that was really accomplished on facebook was to reinforce the argument for full encryption of radio traffic. That will mean storm spotting info will be unavailable and THAT would be very useful info to be able to hear, far more useful than just hearing exciting firestuff and playing gossip central on facebook.

There was more than one in that group putting out false information. They didn't even know what code blue or black meant if you read the definitions given when someone asked. Facebook is fine for keeping in touch with family or friends, but you can't look at someone's page and expect blow by blow descriptions of an emergency scene to be accurate.

Someone listening on a scanner isn't going to get the full story and emergency responders are forbidden from supplying the public with information before it is released by the officials. If anyone is working on scene using cell phones or otherwise giving info out to these facebook users they can get in serious trouble. And if any of those facebook posters are themselves members of emergency services or connected to individuals employed by them they need to keep their mouths shut.

It's not any more irresponsible to put it on facebook than it is to put it on here, I don't see the difference as long as it's factual. I'm glad to see the info spread around because I have friends who live there. Personally i was glad to see the post here... Very Happy

PostSubject: Re: thought there would be people on about epworth   thought there would be people on about epworth Icon_minitimeSun Jan 16, 2011 4:31 am

That includes here too Blackie, but I believe those here were getting it from gossip central AKA "The People of Hays" on facebook. The problem is that not everything was factual. Putting it on that there was a fire was not a problem. Letting others know where residents will be taken, or how to inquire about friends and family residing there is not a problem. But no private individual (or emergency responder) has any business putting out casualty reports, or posting how it happened or who is responsible before the proper officials have even made their final determinations.

If you have friends there I would assume you wouldn't want rumors going around that there were fatalities when there weren't. There have been false reports of fatalities and injuries time and time again in this county just because someone wants to be the first to shout it out and it's BS. Sometimes a person found dead in a home or car is not the person who owned it. Kids are known for borrowing older friends ID's to get into bars. The man from Ellis who was recently hit by a truck on I-70 was incorrectly identified by local gossips who spread it all over town that another man with the same first name had been killed.

But as Luke pointed out, these scanner listeners who just have to be the first to inform the public of who has died, or who has beat up their wife, or gotten a DUI, have caused numerous agencies to go fully encrypted on radio traffic and it may happen here next.

So the next time someone wants to turn on the scanner to find out what an approaching storm is doing, or wants to know why there's dozens of emergency vehicles converging on their neighborhood, they can thank those who think the public has the right to gossip for hearing nothing but static.

I just posted about there being a fire and needing prayers. I listened to the scanner, heard all the crap, and was amazed at how fast people were reposting partial bits of information and starting the "what the heard" stuff. I was more surprised that they actually said a few of the patients names over the scanner. Isn't that a major hippa violation?

What you did isn't a problem. An attempt to help that doesn't interfere with operations or give out confidential information is usually fine. Yes giving names out on the radio is usually not done. But if a family member is asking for help to locate, or a certain person is unaccounted for it's different and that may have been the case. Even a minors name may be broadcast if there's a concern for their safety, especially with whereabouts unknown.

She always did seem to bounce back and forth on things. Kinda wide range of mood swings. Not everything posted there was bad but whoever is going to run it needs to be careful that information is accurate and appropriate. Posting that there's an incident in progress or who family can call for information, or where to give donations, or the locations of emergency shelters isn't bad. But posting inaccurate things like false death reports or a 10 code list that doesn't match up with this county aren't helping anyone. One thing that can happen alot is when multiple calls are taking place and scanner listeners unfamiliar with things confuse one incident with another. Even experienced dispatchers can find a large incident with multiple agencies, or mutiple incidents difficult to keep track of.

Scanners are a great tool, especially during tornado time. But info is very choppy and sometimes they are only relaying what bystanders are telling them to begin with so it may not be right anyways. It's nice to know someone is willing to help out in situations like that, but it has to be limited. The command center will decide what they need and what information to release.

If anyone would truly like to help in these incidents the best way would be to contact agencies before an emergency such as Fire Departments, Emergency Preparedness, or Red Cross and ask to be a volunteer. Or make it known to them if you have a service or ability that could be useful. But I'm afraid just trying to be the first to give blow by blow descriptions on the internet of what someone thinks is going on looks more like grandstanding than being helpful.

I don't think she's selling donated things chiefsfan unless you know something I don't. She's just making it hard to miss ads for her business. It's supposed to be a page to discuss things about Hays, but it seems more like a lure to get you to see her ads for her business.

She used to use this place to advertise things for sale or business services pretty regular too but the facebook page seems to be an attractant to potential customers disguised as a page about Hays and that just seems tacky.

No, it wasn't the stuff donated to the fire victims or I would do something about it. Smile because she moved w/her husband to another town and begged someone to get her the next day. When she came back she had "nothing" so she begged people for donations and someone (a church from the sounds of it) went and bought her a bunch of stuff. Well she went and got her stuff and now she is selling the donated stuff.

If she was as big on helping others as she puts out to be she'd find another needy family and donate it to them. Like maybe the Russell fire family.

I'd never visited her Hays page until now. But I see why you were asking about her L2C. Doesn't appear her personality has changed much since she was a regular on 67601.

Her typical pattern was to come in all bubbly and nice for a while. Then she'd start promoting herself, or something she had for sale in a way that always came off kind of like a kid who "must" be the star of the room. Until eventually someone questioned something she said. She seemed to crave the spotlight until something negative was said and then all hell would break loose and there'd be a big fight and she'd disappear for a few days or weeks. Then she'd show back up and it'd start all over again. I'd have to call her a classic manic depressive.

As I recall she had became so annoying, verbally abusive, and self absorbed she kind of asked for it. She made rude comments to others here too on more than one occasion. Funny though how you don't recall that I apologized to her for my part in the butt comments and she didn't accept it. By the way, calling us ass pirates is a nice compliment too. Thank you very much for showing your superior level of maturity. Very Happy

And I'd also add that her past here, or whether she uses the Hays facebook page for her own personal gain means very little to me, though I do find the advertising kinda tacky. My only concern now is that those visiting her facebook page for Hays area information get proper and accurate info.

Real mature folks, real mature

First of all I have no idea as to her size, nor could I care less. And I wasnt poking fun at her. I honestly think she's nuts. I dont need her to defend herself to state my opinion of her. IF HOWEVER you think she needs to be able to do that, by all means, have her come back. Id welcome the opportunity to question what shes doing posting all her personal bs/drama/advertisements on a facebook page thats supposed to be about HAYS and HAYS alone. THATS my issue with her.

She's been here under a different name. And trust me, that girl could be as verbally crude and prone to throwing insults and namecalling as anyone here. As to the butt comments, they resulted from a long heated argument in which she had PO'd at least 3 or 4 users. And the photo itself was inviting you to comment because it was a photo of her with her backside in the foreground as she was turning her head to look at the camera. It really emphasized her hiney and because of the way it was taken may have made it look larger than reality. Seriously, it just jumped out at you. LOL
