Yep. We were still living there when they did. Sucked, too! Our kids went from walking distance to school (about 6 blocks to elem and middle school) to having to be bused over 2 miles for elementary and 4 for middle school.

With that many schools closed, the class size must be huge. Probably not a good environment conducive to learning for some kids. Very Happy

I read in the paper that usd 489 requested a meeting with Ellis to discuss consolidation. Ellis declined the meeting. I don't think it would be to Ellis' advantage to merge. The only folks to benefit from that would be hays

It's already been seen that large class sizes don't promote anything but stupidity and gang rivalries.

The story stated that many of the buildings were half empty due to kids transferring to charter or private schools over the last several years, so I imagine the class sizes won't be affected all that much by the merger.

Wanda J. Blanchett, dean of the school of education at the
University of Missouri-Kansas City, said Thursday that Covington's
planned cuts and his timetable were not only feasible, but "critically
important."
"And the reason I say that is because the district is
still operating as far as its infrastructure is concerned as though
it's serving 75,000 students," she said. "But in reality, it's serving
slightly under 17,000 students.

As for KC, MO- they hired this guy to come in and fix things, and praised him on how great he was doing, until he had to do something wildly unpopular. Looks to me like he's right on target with what needs to happen to keep the district afloat though, but I'm no expert.

Big deal especially given the amount of funds pushed into this district due to court decisions started by BVBOE.

Seems to me that the Ellis schools don't do so bad, but it's the way of the times for the small to be absorbed by the large. One big system sometimes provides better access to supply and service, but that small town atmosphere/attitude IMO is better for kids. I may be wrong, but I think 489 follows PC guidelines more closely than Ellis.

Yes, they do. Every kid in Hays High gets a laptop to use. They used to be Apples. Now they're Dell PCs.
